THE PROHIBITION MOVEMENT.
There is a disposition in some quar
ters to regard the prohibition movt.
ment as one of a temporary nature,
and one that, like many others that
have entered into the political arena,
will be of short duration in its influ
ence and effect.
It may not always display the re
markable intensity shown in recent
months in widely separated portions
of the country, but it promises to be
an active, pervading force. The advo
cates of prohibition are imbued with
all the server, zeal, and optimism of
the early advocates of the abolition
of slavery. They worked and hoped
for years without much realization of
results. They voted for decades
knowing they faced defeat in each
campaign, but confident of ultimate
victory. That the seed they sowed
did not fall upon barren ground is at
tested by the increased public senti
ment in their favor.
it is folly for their opponents to as
sert that the establishment of prohi
bition increases the consumption of
liquor. If that assertion were correct,
these who manufacture and sell liquor
would undoubtedly favor prohibition.
The future of prohibition is certainly
more promising of ultimate success
than was the prospect of the anti-slav
ery movement in the ’4o’s and ’so’s
of the last century.
No constitutional provision stands in
the way. No political party, as a par
ty, dare oppose. All the great relig
ious bodies are distinctly more favor
able than they were to the abolition of
human slavery. The recent action of
railway companies demanding elimina
tion of employes addicted to the use
of alcoholic stimulants, the rulings
of similar nature by important com
mercial and manufacturing firms and
corporations, the firmly fixed opinions
of managers and directors of financial
and fiduciary institutions as to the de
sirability of sober clerks and assist
ants —all these are powerful allies in
the prohibition movement. —The Wash
ington Post.

“Oh, you mean ‘Kismet.’ It means

Bridget was limping painfully wnen

“Faith,” was the answerr “I nave
