THE SCHOLAR’S APPEAL.
By J. W. Foley.
Please, teacher, don’t keep Tommy in,
he meant to do no harm!
He doesn’t understand our ways; he’s
brought up on a farm
And never went to city schools until
He never had advantages that we
boys have, you know,
So please don't keep him after school,
because he needs the air.
1 think his brother's sick at home —
perhaps, they need him there.
He oughtn’t to have laughed in school
—he said he didn’t know
That he was breaking such a rule.
Please, teacher, let him go!
Please, teacher, let him go this time,
he feels so awful bad!
If you would let me stay for him I’d
do it and be glad.
Our class boys held a meeting on the
playground at recess
And made me the committee to speak
for him. Oh, do say yes!
You’ll please to listen just this time,
and if you do, why, then,
I’m almost sure that Tommy Gregg
will never smile again.
You see, his mother needs his help to
do the chores, and so
The boys have sent me here to ask
that you will let him go.
Please, teacher, won’t you let him go
and do not keep him in
A half an hour after school! He’s
awful pale and thin
Because he thinks it such disgrace.
You do not seem to know
Some things we boys do —if you did
I’m sure you’d let him go.
If you would like I’ll tell you what: Os
all the boys that played
In our ball nine last Saturday, he is
the one that made
A home run in the ninth’s last half.
Oh, could you see that fly
Which won the game for our side and
beat the Central High!
Oh, if you could have heard the cheers
when Tommy made that run
You would forgive him everything that
he has ever done!
And think of all the honor and the
happiness that he
Has brought on Lincoln Grammar
School! O teacher, don’t you see
It is an awful poor reward to have
him win the game
And then to keep him after school, as
if he was the same
As just a common pupil! Did you say
you’d let him go?
O teacher, he’ll be awful glad! I’ll run
and tell him so!
NEARER, MY GOD, TO THEE.
I know no hymn that appeals, at
once, so thrillingly and exaltingly to
the human heart. Getting nearer to
God is the acme of the aspirations of a
reverent soul, not a note is uttered in
the rendition of this immortal song,
but that it lifts us above the things
that are of the earth earthy.
The authoress of this psalm was a
lady of poetic talent and in her way
had wrought and published to lighten
the suffering of a delicate constitution,
and the constant monotony of the sick
room.
Deafness Cannot bo Cured
by local applications, as they cannot reach the dis
eased portion of the ear. There is only one way to
cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies-
Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mu
cous lining of the Eustachi an Tube. When this tube is
inflamed you have a rumbling sound or Imperfect hear
ing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the re
sult, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and
this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will
be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused
by Catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition
of the mucous surfaces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of
deafness (caused by Catarrh) that cannot be cured by
Hall’s Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free.

God has caused some men and wo
men to walk in the shadows, that they
might, under such inspiration, give
utterance to that which is most in the
heart of man, yet which he is power
less to exercise.
The modest suffering woman —Miss
Sarah Flower Adams —who wrote this
immortal song that lifts us above finite
things and bids us look out upon the
infinite, little knew that she was giv
ing to the world the fairest flower
and the sweetest that ever budded and
bloomed in the human heart.
Olive Shreiner, in one of her dream
novels, portrays a painter "who paint
ed with a single color, and as he
painted his picture became redder
and redder and the artist grew
paler and paler. Artists came
from afar to see his work and
tried to learn the secret of his
color, but he would not tell, and he
painted on with his head bent. low.
One day they found him dead before
his picture and when they took him
up to bury him they found a little
wound just above his left breast. That
was where he had found his color. He
had painted his picture with his own
blood!
Spiritually and physically the met
aphor is true to the writer of this
grand song. In suffering and sorrow
she wrote on and on until chastened
and sanctified by affliction. God lifted
her up to a plane of such high spirit
ual exaltation that she gave utterance
to the loftiest, holiest and most divine
expression possible to the human soul.
This song was the consummate flow-

TERRIBLE CRAMPS
“My wife,” writes Joe Moorhead,
of Archibald, Okla., “had been troub
led with cramps, every month, from
the time she first came to. woman
hood. She would be in bed from
four to seven days at a time.
“She tried doctor’s remedies, but
they did her no good, so, after many
years of suffering, I gave her
CARDUI, as you directed. After
she had taken one bottle, she was not
bothered any more with cramps, and
now she has a fine boy baby.
“We recommend Cardui to all wo
men who suffer from female troub
les.”

a medicine especially for women,
with a record of over 50 years of
success, in the treatment of troubles
peculiar to women.

ith full instructions for use.
