Booklet.(A
letter was misplaced and only found
this week in our moving “clear
ance.’’ Its prohibition prophecy
has become history in the good old
state of Mississippi, but the Beautiful
things said about The Golden Age are
“to good to keep,” ami we give the
long-lost letter in full with lots of
thanks. —Editor.)
Mississippi has been the helpless
victim of a primary election, and there
has been so mucn bitterness, and so
much ugliness, I am so ashamed that
such things should occur in a South
ern State. They talk, and write, and
preach about state’s rights, state’s
rights, and they show very plainly
their inability to manage even one pri
mary election in decency and order.
Wonder why this is?
And now we are to nave a cam
paign for prohibition in the State, and
the coast counties being lull of saloons
and this being a coast county, we will
be sure to have much bitterness and
ugliness to contend with here. “They
say,” that numerous platform speak
ers will come here and make a brave
fight against the whiskey evils.
I am sure I hope, with all the hope
in my heart, that every saloon in the
coast counties will be closed. When
this town was incorporated, a little
more than two years ago, and effort
was made to open a saloon, but the
good citizens fought it with might and
main, and brawn and brain, and de
feated it. One fine, true, good minis
ter was largely instrumental in the
defeat, and he is still here and will
renew the fight if the issue arises
again, which is very likely, as the sa
loon was only stayed off for a time.
If I were a man 1 would do lots of
things to help fight whiskey here, and
everywhere, but a woman can do so
little, it seems. One thing I can do
is to try to put helpful temperance
literature in the homes, and if I were
able to do so, would order hundreds
of copies of The Golden Age, and es
pecially me issues for .July and Au
gust, and put this mighty paper in
every home in this town. 1 pass my
copy on each week to a good man
who reads Dr. Broughton’s sermon and
“Track Through the Bible,” to a
houseful of interested, earnest listen
ers every Sunday afternoon, where the
people have a sermon only once a
month, and they seem to find his read
ing from this fine paper as helpful,
spirituauy, as a sermon preached
straight to them from their minister;
and if I had the copies of the paper 1
would distribute them, as being the
best help i know in the cause of tem
perance.
No one, however callous and self
'centered, can read that splendidly
written account of tne march to the
Grady monument and the fine speeches
made, and not feel aeart and throat
and soul and eyes till with thankful
ness that there are so many people
who can be filled and thriued with
enthusiasm and zeal in a good and
glorious cause and work. That copy
of The Golden Age put into the homes
would be the very best temperance
help I can think of, and if I could do
so, I would see that they reached
every home in this town.
