prepare ourselves fully for life, its
work and its responsibilities.
What Education Means to the Indi
vidual.
To many girls, the thought of gradu
ating, means merely a longed for posi
tion in the social world. We should
have a higher motive in life than
wealth, or social position. While we
are striving to better ourselves by
education, we should remember that
we must not let the knowledge thus
gained lead us into any wrong. Some
very brilliant men and women have
committed terrible crimes. It is far
sadder to think of such people as
these buried in sin, than to think of
the heathen Chinese, who have never
had these opportunities.
What Education Means to a Commu
nity.
Education means a great deal to a
community. What would become of
the churches, the stores, the banks,
and every other great establishment
in a town or a city, if there were no
educated people at their heads?
Think of a church without an edu
cated minister, of a bank without an
educated president and cashier! Nor
would the libraries of this country ex
ist were it not for the hundreds of
books written by educated men and
women. Is it not true that their
books have been and will continue to
be read, helping others many years
after the writers have passed away? .
What Education Means to a Nation.
Education outlives alj things else.
Today all that remains of the great
Roman empire is the Latin books, read
and studied in so many colleges and
schools here in our own country. In
Greece, all of the beauty of culture,
refinement and art for which it was
famous long ago, is there today. Why
this difference? The Romans w’ere
war-loving people, while the Grecians
cared not for war, but for the improv
ing, the using, of their educational ad
vantages; therefore, Athens is noted
now for its many art-galleries, its
sculpture, and its learning.
