Don’t allow yourself to become pes
simistic. Be strong in the idea of suc
cess. Hope on and do not entertain
for a moment the idea of being dis
couraged. It is optimism that causes
the world to progress; it is hope that
pushes on to prosperity; it is courage
that struggles on to success. Always
realize that faith, hope, optimism and
courage can win over all obstacles.
Wear a smile; keep an expression of
uplift and hope, as you go on your way,
believing in the all-prevailing good.
Help others so to believe, and so
strengthen them for the battle i hrough
life.
Live in close touch with good peo

of good ever widening by trying to at
tract others into it. Make the world
beautiful and bright; fill it with hope
and good cheer.

A verse I love to sing as I go about
my daily duties is,
“Let the blessed sunshine in,
Let the blessed sunshine in;
Clear the darkened windows,
Open wide the door;
Let the blessed sunshine in.”
Dear Good Cheer:
Did you ever stop to think about the
fact that Thanksgiving and Christmas,
two real good times, come very close
together? Before we get through
talking about the good times and
good things we had Thanksgiving,
here comes Christmas with some
more good things and good times.
Now there’s April Fool’s Day, and
Fourth of July, they are reasonably far
apart, and not at all related to each
other; one calls forth all sorts of curi
ous letters and unnamed jokes, and
the other all sorts of curious fire
works and unnamed explosions. Now
the good St. Valentine comes just be
fore All Fool’s Day, but he is dignified
and graceful, and makes love in a
stately old fashiomld way. I love
real sure enough Vaßtitines, and think
it wrong to travesty the lovely things
with comics. No one who has it in
him or her to enter fully into the
beautiful spirit of St. Valentine’s
Day could send a comic; and when
one does so far insult the occasion by
so doing, there’s something amiss
with the sender.
But Thanksgiving, it seems to me,
should be about half way between
April Fool’s Day and Christmas
Dear me, there’s All Halloween, and
I am clear forgetting Washington’s
birthday, and Lee’s and Jeff Davis’
and a few other good times. Labor
Day and the annual Sunday School
picnic, and my birthday; but the sad
part about my birthday is that it
comes so close to New Year. (Dear
me, there’s another I was about to for
get, that all the folks combine and
give me one present for both occa
sions.) I try to explain that Santa
Claus comes Christmas, and that Santa
Claus is not expected to give people
birthday presents. But they won’t lis
ten, and continue to consolidate on the
presents, present I should say, or gift;
and here it is nearly Christmas and 1
must hunt up a lot of gifts; one for
Sis, one for “Dora Ann,” my best
girl, one for Grandma, one for Uncle
Will, and that’s all. If I had time I’d
ask some of you Good Cheer girls to
tell me what to get for Dora Ann. I
have decided to get “Sis” a sewing
chair. (She never sews, bat maybe

That “GOOD LUCK” Baking Powder
should be bought by the carload by
jobbers the country over is one of the
most natural things in the business
world. To find the reason for these
astonishing sales you have only to get
the opinions of the thousands of en
thusiastic housekeepers and cooks who
use “GOOD LUCK” exclusively. Bet
ter still, partake of some of the white,
light, wholesome and delicious bread,
cakes and waffles leavened by “GOOD
LUCK.”
“GOOD LUCK” is by all odds the
most popular baking powder; in fact,
that chair would suggest to her to sew
sometimes.)
I tell you all —but please don’t tell —
I’d like to buy Dora Ann a ring, and
make that do for a Christmas present
too, (how’s that for economy?) but
she will not actually say “yes.” She
comes so near it sometimes I most see
stars, and I know she finally will, but
I’d like to have it settled now. Would
I? Some of you fellows who are en
gaged tell me please if an engagement
really does mean that it is all settled?
And since I come to think about it, I
don’t know whether I want it all set
tled or not.
Here’s wishing you all a happy
Christmas and a perfectly lovely New
Year. lam going to Dora Ann’s New
Year reception, and the clothes and
flowers and gifts I’ve got to buy!
Dear me! If I survive I will see you
after it is all over and maybe it will
be “all settled.” ROYAL.
AN INSPIRATION.
By Geo. W. Wheeler.
Your department is well named,
“Good Cheer”; how much we all need
cheering up certain periods of life.
Think of our friend, Tom Lockhart,
who diffuses good cheer in his letters,
although he has lain so long on a mat
tress, and not able to help himself,
yet his story of “His Mysterious Way”
has made many people laugh and cry
by turns. Think you could be cheer
ful twenty-three years, an helpless
cripple to rheumatism?
Tom Lockhart is an inspiration to
all.
Several years ago I heard an old
colored woman, nearly a centenarian,
blind, singing that good song, “I am
Nearer My Home Today Than I Have
Been Before.” What an inspiration to
others was this godly old negro wo
man!
What a golden thought was that,
that prompted Tessa Willingham
Roddey to get up the “Good Cheer”
page! What an inspiration to us all to
do something worth while!
The Golden Age is blessed with
good departments of inspiration. God
bless them all!
