THE LESSON OF THE TWO
STREAMS.
Two little streams of water began
from two litle springs under a hill.
One little stream said, “I intend run
ning on as fast as I can to join the big
stream that flows into the grand and
mighty river.”
The other said, “I don’t see why you
want to do that. You will tire your
self to death running so fast, then
when you join the big water no one
will ever know you any more. I ex
pect to go yonder to that shady place
and empty my water into that hole
and make a nice pool all of my own.”
“Good bye then,” said the first lit
tle stream, and on and on it went over
pebbles and down little cascades, mak
ing small water falls where the birds
took shower baths and. the children
played merrily.
The other flowed into the hole and
soon there was a pool. It was spring
and the place was quite beautiful.
Birds, flowers, butterflies and bees
were about and children bathed in the
deep water. The stream felt happy
while it had all its glory to itself. As
summer advanced, the water became
thick and stagnant. Frogs deposited
eggs in it. Snakes came and lived in
the muddy bottom. The children were
not allowed to play in the sickly water,
nor did the birds love to drink it.
The stream from the spring then
saw its error and wanted to turn aside
from the pool, but it could not. Nor
could it run out of the pool because

the mud and trash absorbed it. The
first little stream had kept its waters

and finds true happiness for itself.

HOW SHE SETTLED THE QUES
TION.
It was away with our old colored
nurses to pacify, and sometimes to
frighten us into obeying them, by tel
ling us stories or deluding us. Ner
vous children were no doubt injured
in this way. The shadows made by
the flickering fire, after they were in
bed, became bears and wild animals
in their imaginations. Sometimes,
though, pleasing stories had been told
them, and as their little eyes closed
in sleep, visions of fairyland passed
in moving pictures in their dreams.
Some strict people believe it very
wrong to delude children with stories
and think the story of Santa Claus
wrong. This delusion gives very small
children a great deal of innocent pleas
ure. Here is a story to illustrate how
children find out who their imaginary
friend really is.
A little girl of six years old roomed
with her big sister. One Christmas
night she borrowed a nice, new, long
■white stocking from her sister and
hung it by the side of the fireplace,
then said her prayers and went to
bed, believing implicitly that real San
ta Claus would come down the chim
ney and fill it with good things. The
fire had about died out, only a bed of
live oak coals gave a dim light in the
room. Big sister touched her saying:
“Look, see Santa Claus.” This she
said in a whisper. It was about the
usual bed time, but the little girl had
been asleep and thought it was mid-

night. She saw a man dressed all in
snowy white standing by the fire-place,
with her long borrowed stocking in his
hand. Was this Santa Claus? She
rubbed her eyes and looked again.
The light was dim and the man who
was busily filling the stocking had a
beard, but he was not old and stout
like the pictures of Santa Claus, and
—yes he did look like her own dear
papa, whom she had not seen for some
time, as he had been away from home.
But he might have returned. She knew
her mother was looking for him. She
lay still a long time after the white
figure had gone noiselessly out, think
ing, trying to settle it all in her mind,
and this is the conclusion she came
to: Santa Claus has to visit hundreds
and thousands of homes and he just
cant do it all in one night, so he sends
letters with money in them to all the
papas and mamas, and gets them to
help him in his work. Satisfied that
this must be the solution of the mys
tery, she fell fast asleep, and when
she waked the sun of the bautiful
Christmas morning was shining in at
her window, and the servants and chil
dren were crying out, “Christmas
Gift.” She jumped out of bed and ran
to the fireplace. The long white stock
ing hung there, full to the top, and
there outside was her dear father feed
ing the chickens. She was quite too
happy not to be content with her last
night’s solution of the problem of San
ta Claus, and she never more bothered
her small head about the matter.
