OUR GOOD CHEER
“FOR THE GOOD WE ALL MAY DO”
Conducted by TESS A WILLINGHAM RODDEY, Long Veach, Miss.
The Golden Age for March 18, 1909.
THE MOCKING BIRD
(At Night.)
A Golden pallor of voluptuous light
Filled the warm Southern night;
The moon, clear orbed, above the syl
van scene,
Moved like a stately queen,
So rife with conscious beauty all the
while,
What could she do but smile
At her own perfect loveliness below,
Glassed in the tranquil flow
Os crystal fountains and unruffled
streams ?
Half lost in waking dreams,
As down the loneliest forest dell I
strayed,
Lo, from a neighboring glade,
Flashed through the drifts of moon
shine swiftly came
A fairy shape of flame.
It rose in dazzling spirals overhead.
Whence to wild sweetness wed,
Poured marvelous melodies, silvery
trill on trill;
The very leaves grew still
On the charmed trees to hearken;
while for me,
Heart-trilled to ecstasy,
I followed —followed the bright shape
that flew,
Still circling up the blue,
Till, as a fountain that has reached
its height,
Falls back in sprays of light,
Slowly dissolved, so that, enraptur
ing lay,
Divinely melts away
Through tremulous spaces to a mu
sic-mist,
Soon by the fitful breeze, how gently
kissed
Into remote and tender silences.
PAUL HAMILTON HAYNE.
OUR GOOD CHEER.
Did you ever feel that you wanted
to reach up and find a Spirit of
Blessing and Help so close to you that
you could touch it, take fast hold of it,
and let it lift you up to higher and
better things without so much effort
on your part? Did you ever get tired
of battling against outward and in
ward forces and feel the need of lean
ing on something everlastingly strong,
that would carry you on anyhow,
whether you helped or not? Did you
ever feel that the work you must do
is so heavy, so hard, so filled with
discouragements and difficulties, that
you want to feel some firm, strong
force pushing it along for you? You
want to feel that it will be done even
if you are weak and discouraged? If
you have felt all this, have you ever
felt the utter comfort, the unspeaka
ble help, the powerful blessing, the
wonderful grace in the beautiful text,
“Casting all your care upon Him. for
He careth for you”?
Just think of the wonder and the
beauty of it! “Casting all your care
upon Him, for He careth for you,”
how it fills us with help, thrills us
with promise, lifts us up with hope,
anchors us with belief! We get lost
in the vastness of the thought—
“ Casting all your care upon Him” —
there are no conditions —no compro
mises—“ Casting all” —that word
“casting”, it means putting the care
away from us, getting rid of it, losing
it altogether, and not just a part of
the care, hut all of it, and the sense
of restfulness that comes to us when
we feel that we have cast off the
care —all of it —and the sense of peace
that comes in the words, “He careth.”
Note, too, the tense of the word
“casting,” it isn’t the past tense,
it is the present, goes on con
stantly, every care that arises,
and they are many, and come
suddenly and unexpectedly, but
that word, casting, implies, nay, com
mands us to get rid of them as they
come, “for He careth for you’—the
responsibility is not shirked, the work
is not left undone, the beauty of the
idea lies in the fact, the blessed con
sciousness, that the work is being bet
ter done, that we have only lifted it
to wiser ways, to higher means,—and
that He —the wise One, the loving
One, the blessed One, “CARETH”—
"He careth for YOU,” your work, your
soul, your spiritual growth, careth for
you—constantly, and you also feel that
in thus “casting all your care upon
Him” you are but obeying a Divine
command, fulfilling a Divine law. You
feel strengthened, and helped, and en
couraged. You lose the idea of hope
lessness and gain an abiding hope.
You lose the idea of many difficulties
and gain an anchor of belief.
If I could have found this text and
the meaning of it years ago, how
much care, and work, and trouble I
would have missed. I found the text,
but I didn’t find the meaning. If you
haven’t found the meaning, let me help
you to find it, for it means so much.
It means that you can lose the care,
and anxiety, and sense of difficulty,
and only “do with your might what
your hands find to do,” “looking unto
Jesus, the Author and Finisher,” to
assume all care, feeling that if we do
the work, if we keep in touch, there
is always a spirit of blessing and help
lifting us up and carrying us on, a
spirit so near we can feel its pres
ence, so close, we can feel the touch,
so real we can abide in its strength,
so true we can trust in its power, so
wonderful we can live in its grace.
TO BUILD FOR GOD.
A small number of Baptists here are
trying to organize a church, and we
are so few, but strong in zeal and
willingness to believe that we can
succeed, we ask all the spiritual
and strength, and uplift your prayers
can give us; pray for our success. Our
pastor came last week; he is young,
but full of courage and enthusiasm,
and we few Baptists want to “hold
up his hands.” He has three other
places wherein to organize and build,
and so few at each place. But we do
so much want a church. It means
to buy a lot, build a church, organize
a Ladies’ Aid, hold prayer meetings,
establish a Sunday school —and it
seems we have so few. We need re
ligious literature, we need men and
women with time and strength to help
us. We are hopeful and have found
THIS WILL INTEREST MANY.
