A LESSON.
By Jean Blewett,
One lesson take to heart this year,
Be good to those with whom you
live.
’Tis better not to quarrel, dear,
Than ’tis to kiss and say forgive.
Put self behind —turn tender eyes;
Keep back the words that hurt and
sting.
We learn, when sorrow makes us
wise,
Forbearance is the grandest thing.
Be tender, lest some day you turn
Your eyes on loved ones fast asleep,
And whisper as you lean and yearn:
“How often I have made you weep!
Some loved you not, and words let fall
That must have pierced your gentle
breast;
But I who loved you best of all
Did hurt you more than all the
rest.”

CHAT,
My Dear Young People: I can't
afford to take space this week, with
so many fine letters waiting for it.
Just know you are doing two things:
Helping your Little Mother, and puz
zling her brain no little to decide as
to who should carry off the honors
for the best letter.
OUR LITTLE PREACHER ON THE
CHRISTIAN’S LIGHT.
Dear Little Mother and Cousins:
This is my second letter. I said in
my last letter that I was going to
be a minister and that I preached
some now. This letter is part of a
sermon I preached yesterday, but let
me give my letter a subject—“ Light.”
We hear Christians sometimes say,
“Why can’t I lead some soul to Christ?
I’ve tried, but I can’t.” I’ll tell you,
most of the Godly or Christian people
go to dances and theaters, etc. I know
we may get forgiveness for that, but
it covers up our light. How? When
the younger Christian sees you go to
these ungodly places he thinks it
is not wrong, though he has heard
sermons preached against it. He will
say, “Why can’t I go to the theater?
some of our best church members go
there, and if they can go I can too.”
And you see, if we want our light to
shine we must do away with such
things. It’s just like a boarding

school, though I’ve never been to
one. When a new pupil comes, you go
ahead carelesslv and do something
that is wrong, then, when the new
pupil sees you, he doesn’t think it
is against the rule, and so he goes
ahead and does the same thing, and
your thoughtlessness gets him into
trouble. Nearly all over Georgia peo
ple are organizing societies, which are
called “The Civic Beauty Society.”
They are trying to make Georgia
more beautiful, but if we want tc
make Georgia happier, every boy, girl,
man and woman must try to let his
or her light shine the brightest for
God. If each one of us would do our
duty, all we can for God, then we will
not need “Civic Beauty Societies.”
There are some places where our light
will not shine. These places are such
as the barroom, the ballroom, the
theater, or the card table. The atmos
phere is not for our light. Dr. Jenkins
(our pastor) said once that, always
just before the miners go into the
mine they let down a light, if it
shines brightly they know it is safe,
but if it begins to flicker they know
they would better stay out. And so,
young Christians, before you go to
these places, let down the light of a
God-given conscience, and if it burns
brightly, we may know it is safe, but,
mind you, if the light begins to flicker
with questions, you had better keep
out. I am going to cut this letter
short, so as to let others have space.
I am a member of the First Baptist
church, and eleven years old. I close
with love and success to The Golden
Age.
