TO THE MOCKING BIRD.
Winged mimic of the woods!
Thou motley fool!
Who shall thy gay buffoonery de
scribe?
Thine ever ready notes of ridicule
Pursue thy fellows still with jest and
gibe—
Wit, sophist, songster—Yorick of thy
tribe,
Thou sportive satirist of Nature's
school,
To thee the palm of scoffing we as
cribe,
Arch mocker and mad abbott of mis
rule!
For such thou art by day, but all night
long
Thou pourest a soft, sweet pensive
strain,
As if thou didst in this thy moon
light song
Like to the melancholy Jacques ex
claim,
Musing on falsehood, folly, vice and
wrong,
And sighing for thy motley coat
again.

CHANDELEUR ISLAND.
All along the southern coast of Mis
sissippi lie queer shaped, beautiful
islands; some close in, some a few
hours out by sailboat, and other larger
ones rather far out, requiring a day
or two, or three, owing to the wind,
to make a trip to them. One of the
largest, and perhaps the most inter
esting, is Chandeleur Island. There
is the first lighthouse seen after
leaving Cuba, and the first land seen.
There are three keepers employed at
Chandeleur Island lighthouse, and any
one not acquainted with the import
ance of the lighthouse might think
it unnecessary to have so many, but
when they tell you what the duties c
the keepers are you readily under
stand. The light is so rigged that it is
expected to revolve through the night
without stopping, but the best of ma
chinery sometimes fails, and suppose
the light should fail and a vessel
should run aground, or suppose a
heavy gale blowing and the light failed
and a passing vessel get too near the
shoals and be driven on the beach and
wrecked, or suppose a boat in distress
in deep water, and the crew, seeing no
light, knew not where to call for aid.
To insure the light doing its duty, a
man is on watch every hour. The
three men take turns on watch at
night and sleep in the day. There
is also a man who works about the
lighthouse. The keepers have com
fortable cottages in which they and
their families live. The women usual
ly spend thd 5 summers ashore. Tin
men are allowed to have pigs ami
chickens, but no cows. It is a dreary
life and taxing to the nerves, because
of the frightful responsibility and
loneliness. Yet they have the feeling
of being necessary to their govern
ment as life savers —and many times
they do rescue people and save many
lives outside their regular duties with
the lighthouse.
Storms many times sweep over the
island with terrific force and some
times the keepers’ cottages are stand
ing in water, although built on piers
ten feet high. In 1893 the lighthouse
was undermined by waters during a
fearful gale, and careened and had
to be torn down —It was a brick tower.
The quarantine station was also de
stroyed. The ruins stand yet as proof
The Golden Age for April 29, 1909.
SWEET THING.
1.
Out among the roses.
Leaning on my arm,
Every step a grace,
Every move a charm, —
Every look a Cupid’s dart
To send Love’s arrow to my heart
And make me think
My Baby, you’ie a sweet thing.
Chorus.
You’re a sweet thing,
You’re a bright thing,
You're all the girl I love.
You’re a sweet thing.
You’re just the right thing,
Let me tell you, Baby,
You’re a sweet thing.
IL
Lips as red as cherries. —
Hair the sheen of gold,—
I long to tell the story,
Ever new, yet ever old.
The story that I love you best.
And draw you in my arms to rest
While I whisper, ‘“Baby,
You’re a sweet thing.”
Tessa Willingham Roddey.
of what the storms can do as they
sweep unhindered over the Gulf of
Mexico. The lighthouse was re-built
of steel on re-enforced concrete foun
dations extending sixty feet below sea
level at low tide. From this founda
tion a steel frame rises in which is
a steel tower, on which is the light.
The lenses alone cost $12,000. The
Quarantine Station was re-built on
Ship Island.
There is no vegetation on the island
—not a tree or a shrub, but miniature
sand doons are overgrown with sea
morning glories, vetch, sea oats and
weeds forming a jungle almost im
possible to penetrate.
There are millions of birds, gulls,
pelicans, ducks, geese and land birds,
all fully protected by the Audubon So
ciety, and no one is allowed to land
with any destructive weapons. Tur
tles abound, and a pleasure party vis
iting the island found a nest contain
ing 114 eggs. They said the path to
the nest looked as though made by
two pigeon-toed men walking abreast.
The eggs are about the shape of a
small rubber ball, with a soft white
shell. There are many raccoons on
the island, but no, or very few, snakes.
The lower end of the island is
thronged with sea birds that darken
like a cloud when in flight. The rac
coons will be gradually destroyed, as
will anything that tends to destroy
birds, as this is the “Birds’ Paradise”
of the Audubon Society—and protected
by them as a “Bird Preserve.”
