OUR GOOD CHEER
“FOR THE GOOD WE ALL MAY DO"
Conducted by TESSA WILLINGHAM RODDEY, Long Reach, Miss.
HIS SWEETHEARTS TWO.
One was the wife with the winsome
kiss,
One was the babe she bore;
These were the bringers of all his
bliss,
These were his life and more.
Out of the laggard the lion grew,
This was the luck of him;
Wooed by the wiles of his sweethearts
two,
Jenny and little Jim.
.¥
He who had dozed in the shining sun
Woke with a sweet new thrill;
He, with no record of duty done,
Roused with a wish and will,
Reacher to the plane of the higher
few,
This was the luck of him;
Lifted and led by his sweethearts two,
Jennie and little Jim.
Preacher nor priest could his soul
entice,
, Yet was he lured to grace;
Saved by the blue of the baby eyes,
Saved by the fond embrace.
Day broke at last on the darkened
view,
This was the luck of him;
Charmed to the truth by his sweet
hearts two,
Jennie and little Jim.
One was the wife with the winsome
kiss,
One was the babe she bore;
Man may not know greater joy than
his,
Angels may ask no more.
High heaven beamed as he upward
grew,
Blessing the luck of him,
Loved into light by his sweethearts
two,
Jennie and little Jim.

CHAT.
I note with a deal of regret the ten
dency to hurry through divine ser
vices. So often, recently, I’ve heard
the remark, “we must be on time —
we haven’t much time, and we must
finish by a certain time.” It seems to
me that all other things should be
subservient to divine services; that
we should never feel that it is neces
sary to hurry through a service held
tor the Master. It seems to me fit
ting that our time should be given
freely to our services in praise of
Christ, and that no part of them
should be eliminated under any cir
cumstances. God gives us so many
things. He reserved only one day to
be set apart for His worship, and our
rest, and we are condensing and rob
bing Him of that more and more it
seems, that we may be able to use
more and more of each Sabbath for
our worldly needs and conveniences.
“We haven’t time to finish our ser
vices as we had intended,” said a min
ister recently. He had time: to what
higher use did he put it?
“We haven’t time to read but half
of our scripture lesson today,” said a
Sunday school superintendent recent
ly. Please help me to understand why
the time wouldn’t have been better

given to scripture reading than to any
other thing?
A man who is an earnest Bible
student, who attends Sunday school,
because he has a strong desire to
learn the scriptures said, “I hoped
our superintendent would explain
those obscure passages in the last
part of our scripture lesson, we had
studied over them so hard, at home,
but he didn’t ‘have time’ to read all
the lesson, and made no comments on
any part of it. I do wish we could
have time for some real Bible study.”
And this is true in so many instances.
The Sunday school is hurried through
with, and the sermon is hurried
through, and the songs only partly
sung, and altogether divine services
are so condensed, and everybody
seems so hurried, and it would give
the impression that we go to the Sun
day school because it is our duty to
do so, but we want to get that duty
done just as quickly as possible and
get to our own personal affairs.
A young man said not long ago, “I
wish they’d hurry with Sunday school,
so T can meet the excursion.” A
teacher will come in, one eye on her
class, one ear on her class, the other
eye on her watch, and the other ear
listening for a car she hopes to catch;
can she do her whole duty by her
class ?
A young lady said: “I never look
at my lesson until I am ready for
Sunday school, then I sit down and
get it, and I don’t forget it before I
get to the class.” Can you realize
that she gets anything worth while
from a lesson studied (?) that way?
A teacher in a junior grade never
opens her quarterly until she gets to
her class pew, and then she asks the
questions laid down there, listens to
the children stumble through the an
swers, makes a short list —so many
present; so many absent; so much
collection —and hands that in, closes
her quarterly with a sigh of relief,
and thinks her whole duty done. Can
she give to those children any part
of the beauty, the depth, the grand
eur, the holiness of the spiritual
thought embodied in that lesson in
that mechanical, hurried way? No,
most emphatically. To impart a thing
one must have that thing, as no one
can impart something they haven’t
got, and no one can take in the holy
truths of God’s Word in a hurried
way; it requires time to take them
in properly, and it requires time to
impart them to others. One must be
open and responsive; must give of the
nature to spiritual truths; must pray
over them; must study them with the
mind and with the spirit, and the
spirit must be “in time,” and if it is
not “in time,” we should get it in time
by earnest prayer. God wants no hur
ried, mechanical service. He wants
no lip service. He cares not for the
brilliancy of your intellect He wants
no science. He appreciates no ethi
cal culture, bue He does want, He
does need, and He does appreciate
your spiritual response to Him. He
feels your spiritual oneness with Him.
He sees this spirit made manifest in
you, and He appreciates all this, and
