deprived of so much that children
should know about. They see no
birds; they have no pets, and children
should always be "permitted to have
all the pets they wish, to call forth
their care and consideration for dumb
animals. They should know all about
birds at first not just from pic
tures in books, occasional glimpses of
them in parks, etc., but they should
climb trees, see bird nests, feel an
ownership interest in the birds; own
pets of all kinds; they should have
the clean, clear, running brooks of the
country to wade in and play in—l feel
so sorry for them here.” >
“Yes,” she answered, “but it is
hopeless. The fathers imagine they
can make money here; they get a $1
or $2 a day; some of them more than
that. The older children get work
sometimes; they are too ignorant to
realize that children have souls and
minds that should be considered even
more than bodies to be clothed and
appetites to be appeased. The people
who live here are the class who never
get above victuals and clothes; hu
manity is made of earth, and like the
earth, it is formed in stratas, you
know. Each strata has its place; is
held there by the universal laws, and
can’t get away from it —we can’t help
them.”
“Yes, we can help them,” I said em
phatically, “we can’t change the physi
cal- construction or formation of the
earth, but we can of humanity, be
cause humanity is blessed with men
tality, and if we can place the mind in
a position to grasp, to realize things,
the mind will rise, and carry the body
up with it. As long as these people
live here we can do nothing with
them; we can help them to a certain
extent, but can’t we get them away
from here?”
“I don’t know,” she answered, “it
is none of my business. Their affairs
do not concern me; I believe in the
survival of the fittest; if it had been
in them to rise, they would have risen.
I never meddle with the laws of na
ture, either physical nature or human
nature. I suppose God knows where
He wants people, and puts them there.
It doesn’t concern me.”
I changed the conversation. She
had many fine qualities, but was bit
terly selfish, as fatalists always are;
but the conversation set me to think
ing.
I am well aware of the fact that
people in cities think country people
are ignorant; they really think so.

People in cities, as a rule, use more
correct language; rhetoric and gram
mar are more necessary to their con
versational abilities. City people
know the latest songs, read the new
est books, see the new opera stars,
and hear the lecturers and distinguish
ed divines, etc. They live in a rush;
theyTiave no time for thought; they do
not know themselves; they know all
the artificialities of life, and none of
the naturalness of it; they live in an
artificial atmosphere; they are for the
most part, custom made. Custom made
is a queer term to apply to a person
but just as there are custom made
clothes, there are custom made people
to wear them. There are people who
prefer to be custom made; they do
not want the naturalness, sincerity
and simplicity of the country; they
look at it as ’ greenness,” “narrow
ness,” ignorance, etc., and prefer to oe
natural only in seeming, but to be fun
of guile really. However, I am, per
haps, prejudiced in favor of country
people, as I am country-bred. Per
haps some city-bred sister will express
her views, and help me to realize if
I am wrong, or even narrow; or per
haps some city brother will take up
his pen to agree with me; or better
still, perhaps some country brother
or sister will help me out.
Let us hear from you.

LADIES’ MISSIONARY MEETING.
Last week, instead of the regular
business meeting of our Ladies Mis
sionary and Aid Society, Mrs. W. A.
McComb, the wife of the well known
state evangelist of Mississippi, talked
to us about an hour on “State and
General Home Missions.” She was full
of zeal and enthusiasm for her work,
and she inspired us to fuller energy
and earnestness along that line. She
is a fine talker, forcible and graceful,
gentle, lovely and appealing. She
reached our hearts and brought us all
right up into sympathy with the won
derful work she told of. She told us
what the Baptists, as a denomination,
have done; what they are doing now,
and outlined some policies as to the
work, in an executive way, that we
want to do in the near future. I wish
everybody interested in the great work
of soul winning and soul saving could
have heard her talk; they would have
felt inspired to greater effort; they
would have felt encouraged, strength
ened and helped in a substantial way.
Our committee on refreshments served
cake and cream, and we gave Mrs.
McComb a reception lasting one hour.
Mrs. McComb has met our editor,
and enjoyed hearing him lecture.
We have had a wonderful revival
in our church; doubled our member
ship. God has been very good to us
indeed, and we feel humbly, reverent
ly thankful. T. W. R.
