REPORT ON COCA-COLA.
In last week’s issue of this paper
we printed letters from the State
Chemist of Georgia and the assistant
chemist of the University of Texas,
who have made analysis of the popu
lar temperance drink showing that
COCA-COLA contains no cocaine or
other injurious ingredient. We print
below a copy of a letter from Profes
sor Burney of South Carolina College.
Dozens of chemists have analyzed Co-
CA-COLA and all agree as to its free
dom from cocaine, morphine, whiskey
and all injurious materials. A book
let has been published containing
these reports and a copy will be sent
free to any reader of this paper who
has any doubt whatever as to COCA
COLA being what it claims to be, —
a pure, harmless, delicious, refreshing,
temperance drink
CHEMICAL DEPARTMENT.
South Carolina College,
Columbia, S. C., Jan. 17th, 1906.
This is to certify that I have bought
in the open market an original pack
age of five gallons of COCA-COLA,
bearing the label of ‘‘The Coca-Cola
Company, Atlanta, Ga.,” and have sub
jected the same to careful analysis.
The object of this investigation be
ing to establish the presence or ab
sence of cocaine, and possibly other
injurious alkaloids I operated on quan
tities of three to five times the
amount contained in a bottle of the
carbonated beverage. The extractions
of the syrup were repeated until the
alkaloids were entirely removed, and
the crystalline substance thus obtain
ed was further separated by fractional'
extractions, after which it was concen
trated and tested. Since this concen
trated product failed to respond to the
test for cocaine, it is clear that the
alkaloid is absent, or, if present at
all, then in quantities too minute to
allow detection. The active constitu
ent of COCA-COLA syrup proved to
be caffeine, and in quantities seeming
ly less than a cup of good coffee or
tea. There was no evidence of the
presence of other alkaloids.
Yours truly,
(Signed)—W. B. Burney, Chemist.

Pellagra and Hookworms.
Pellagra attacks people who are run
down and have no vitality to resist
disease.
Hookworms suck the blood of their
victims and get them in condition to
take any disease that is prevalent.
Two million people in the South
suffer from the ravages of the hook
worm. Their vitality is lowered and
the ability to develop ruddy health is
checked —checked as long as Hook

VOICES OF YOUTH
CONDUCTED BY THE EDITOR.
JUST A PRAYER IN MY HEART.
A prayer when the day is dawning,
And again at the fall of night;
A prayer in the soft, sweet morning
When the hours are fair and bright.
A prayer at the coming of noontide,
While the skies are soft and blue.
A prayer in the misty gloaming,
Just a prayer in my heart for you.
A prayer when the winds keep revel
Afar o’er ice-clad hills,
A prayer when the glad, sweet spring
time
With joy the wide earth thrills.
A prayer when the summer roses
Will soon be lost to view
By the radiance of autumn beauty,
A prayer in my heart for you.
A prayer as I kneel at the altar
Where the pictured Christ bends
near,
That He, with His love will crown
you,
Will screen you from pain and fear.
A prayer for hours of gladness
That life’s skies may be ever blue,
And your heart be free from sadness,
Just a prayer in my heart, for you.

Dear Young People:
i
the blessing of good health to think
of how little we show our gratitude
in our everyday lives. Do we turn
always the smile to our friends when
there is an ache in the heart? That
is a beautiful idea of self-sacrifice,
that purifies our hearts as few things
can. Try it, boys and girls; you can
make your home a happy one, or a
very unhappy one, just as you deter
mine in your heart it shall be. It is
not hard times that makes unhappi
ness, nor is it money that can always
turn our sorrows into joy; it is often
the turning of the happy side to the
front, the accepting of what comes
as best, and doing it cheerfully. This
reminds me of a little story I read,
when quite a child, of a girl who had
four faces, one was bright and smil
ing, just beaming with joy and as she
walked down the street all the people
on that side of her were answering
her smiles with their own radiant
faces, but just on the other side was
a face all drawn with pain and a com
plaining expression rested on it, and
each face that looked at her from
that side reflected the “grouchy” fea
tures; the third face was all distorted
with anger, and bitter, harsh words
were issuing from the J.ips, leaving
the same influence as the other two,
while the fourth had a tongue like a
snake and a wasp resting on her
breast was trying to sting all those
that came near. On that side of her
were several who were fighting each
other as a result of her backbiting,
snake-like tongue, and some had been
slain by the poisonous sting of the
wasp. And, although I was so young,
this picture made an impression on
my heart that has lingered with me,
and has helped me many times, like
Harlow, to turn a smile when the
heart was sad and burdened. It is nec
essary that we be tried, but if there

LITTLE MOTHER.
A HELPFUL MOTTO.
Suwanee, Ga., Sept. 6, 1909.
Dear Little Mother and Circle:
It seems I just can t stay away any
longer.
All the family have gone to Sunday
School this afternoon except mother
and myself, so while all is quiet and
I can get my thoughts together I will
tell you secretly about a gentleman
who has just visited our community.
He spoke at Sheltonville, September
3, and gave his lecture, “Climbing Up
ward,” that night which was indeed
fine. I wish all the Cousins couid
have heard him. He spoke at a Sun
day School celebration at our churcn
on the following Saturday, which I
enjoyed, if possible, better. He gave
us this motto: “I must, I can, I will,”
which I think will be a great help to
me in my difficulties through life. Now
can any of the Cousins guess who this
gentleman was? Os course, it was
“Brother Willie.” We were certainly
glad to have him with us; hope he
will come again real soon. Say, Cous
in’s the 15th of October is Brother
Willie’s birthday; don’t you all think
it would be fine to give him a post
card shower. Why don’t more of the
Cousins write? We must not neglect
our Corner. I fear Brother Willie has
forgotten his boys and girls. I am your
loving “BUNNY.”
