will give you some picture cards and

“He will be mightily pleased to get
them,” the girl said with feeling. “It’s
kind of you to think of him, Miss Wes
ton. He’s not strong like most boys
and he —” Her voice broke, her eyes
filled with tears, and she hurriedly
turned into the road that led to her
home —alas! no home for her.
When Vera entered the room, she
had occupied the night, before she
missed her trunk.
“It’s been toted up to the loft. I
mean upstairs to your room,” Mrs.
Wiggin’s explained. “Yes,” she went
on, “Rob said you would rather sleep
up thar, and he got through with his
work quick this mornin’, and turned
in to fixin’ the room so’s you could
have it tonight. Go up and see how
you likes it.”
Vera ran up to the attic and uttered
an exclamation of surprise and pleas
ure, when she saw how it had been
transformed. The dust, the cobwebs,
the rubbish were all gone. The walls
were white washed, the floor scrubbed,
the bed had a mattress upon it, and a
green and white coverlet. A bright
home made rug was before the fire
place, and there was an arm chair;
also a table, on which there were
flowers in an earthen jar. Altogether,
the room needed only a few touches
to make it look cosy and inviting.
“What shall I do for Rob in return for
all the trouble he has gone to,” she
asked, touched by the boy’s thought
for her comfort. “Play and sing for
him tonight; that’ll more than pay
him,” returned his mother.

GERMANS PLANTING FORESTS IN
CHINA.
In considering the progress of the
almost world-wide movement for pro
tection of forests, an interesting re
view has just been made of the work
in China —a country which is so often
cited as an example of the evil effects
of deforestation.
In a portion of the Celestial King
dom earnest efforts are now being
made to re-establish a forest cover by
planting. Consul Wilbur T. Gracey, of
Tsingtau, China, reports that the Ger
mans in that region are making suc
cessful attempts at reforestation. The
success of the work was practically
assured at the start, for to Germany
is given the credit for having the high
est developed system of forestry, and
it was natural to expect that the long
experience in forest work in the Fa
therland would lessen preliminary ex
perimentation and hasten progress in
China.
When Tsingtau was occupied by the
Germans about eleven years ago the
hills were found bare and barren, with
only a sporadic growth of scrub pine
and weeds. Plans for reforestation
were at once made, and about 2,965
acres have already been planted.
About half of this is planted in aca
cias, the balance in pine, larch, walnut,
oak, ash, maples, and alders. So suc
cessful has this planting been that the
point has already been reached where
the sale of timber can be made. Small
branches are sold for fire wood and
some of the timber is used for mining
purposes. The sale and exportation
of acacia is expected to become a con
siderable source of revenue during the
next few years.
It is patricularly remarkable that
this work should have been so success
ful in view of the difficulties to which
the plantation was subjected. The
rainfall is light and lack of moisture
considerably retarded the development
of the trees. By far the worst ene
mies, however, were insects. Various
species of caterpillars and other in
sects have been so destructive that
thousands of Chinese boys and women
are now engaged annually to destroy
them. Various measures of preven
tion have been tried, such as placing
girdles of glue on the trees, but these
have not been effective and it was
found necessary to resort to a system
atic destruction of the insects by hand.
During 1908 over seven million cat
erpillars were gathered by hand,
smashed, covered with lime, and aft
erwards used as fertilizer. This meth
od has been successful in protecting
the greater part of the plantations, but
on the mountains on the border of the
territory the trees are eaten bare.
Acacias appear to withstand the at
tacks of the insects better than any
other species, and the summits of the
mountains are now being planted with
these trees in an effort to check fu
ture destruction. In addition to these
enemies, Chinese thieves are another
source of difficulty and on one occa
sion a band of thirty-six thieves was
captured in the act of stealing wood.
In spite of these drawbacks, how
ever, the work has been so successful
that the Chinese government is now
undertaking forestry schemes in a
number of places under advice from
Gerjnan experts. This work centers
about Mukden, Manchuria, where suc
cess has already been obtained with
acacias and experiments are now be
ing made with other trees. The first
Chinese forest school was established
at Mukden two years ago. Six hun
dred and twenty-five acres have al
ready been set apart for cultivation,
and 24,710 acres are to be purchased
for afforestation.
Three large mines in China, in the
provinces of Chihli and Shansi, which
are under the management of Euro
peans, are making plans for afforesta
tion and the Shantung Railway is
planting acacias along 260 miles of its
track. This, however, is simply a be
ginning of the work, and the Chinese
government now has in contemplation
the inauguration of extensive affores
tation work in different parts of China.
