A PICTURE FRQM MEMORY.
A teacher and her pupils, walking
homeward, went by to see an old ne
gro friend. This old woman and her
husband lived alone off in an old
field near a branch. The hut was
snug and cosy. The yard was neat
ly paled in and some Howers were
growing. A garden was also neatly
kept and beyond was a horse lot, fowl
house and wood pile. The old wo
man was so glad to see her white
visitors. “Let me have your lunch
baskets,” she said, and eagerly she
ate the remnants of their dinners.
“Why, Aunt Liddie, you have plen
ty to eat, do you not?” the teacher
asked.
"Yes, ma'am, but I like to eat white
folks victuals sometimes, 1 get tired
eating my own cooking.”

inexhaustible theme for poets and
novelists is that love between man
and woman before marriage. We
hear little of the romance of married
life. The affection existing between
wedded lovers is rarely exploited. But
to mo there is something infinitely
more interesting and tender, much
more worthy of poet’s pen and
artist’s brush, in the love between
man and wife —that affection which
weathers the storms of years and
welds two hearts and lives with all
their varied interests into one. How
hard it must be for the one to see the
other go after half a century spent
together in closest sympathy! How
torn and bleeding must be the heart
of the one who is left behind!

The best workers for the best

efforts snatched from under them, as

and their hopes seem to fall to the
ground, but it is only seeming. Truth,
crushed to earth, must rise again.
