Dr. CHASE, 224 North 10th St., Philadelphia, Pa.
sion fi’om the flower-wound thrones
of lust, that would shred frivolity of
her last thread of tinsel, that would
change bourgeoise mirth to a climax
of terror.
Tonight the grim painting glowed
in all its symphony of diabolic color,
baleful reds, chill steels and whites
so ghastly that the eyes wavered,
shuddered, and the lips framed them
selves involuntarily for a scream.
Why had she painted this tragic
embodiment of soul-agony?
Why had Michael Angelo drawn
“The L<ast Judgment,” or Rubens “The
descent From the Cross?”
Over the passionate Southland, over
the virgin altars of Spring, over the
oft-swung censers of the stars, shone
the weird influence of a comet —per-
haps, that was the cause. For many
days, the sun had gone down —down to
a crimson maelstrom, red as blood, —
perhaps that was the psychic reason.
The naked Psyche upheld her violet
torch, and the glitter of bluish lamp
light, along the plane of the black,
oval marble table, seemed like the
dances of Elfland, on the canvas, like
the rainbow flame of the starry Aurora
Borealis, risen unexpected on mid
ocean.
A Turkish rug at the feet of the
enthralled girl, seemed to swell with
the mystic billows of unseen winds,
as the silence of the night deepened.
She shuddered!
And, with a decisive motion of the
hand, which gleamed below the green
and gray-toned sleeve, she shut out
suddenly the picture of Spanish hor
ror.
The child of her own brain awed
her.
She tried to break away from its
masterful influence by wandering
about the room, but her eyes returned
the azure curtain, and her thoughts
against her will to the tragic paint
ing.
It was a spirit picture.
She came back to the center table,
and drew a cluster of pink carnations
through the gold-sash of her evening
dress —hypnotic in its peculiar blend
of colors, selecting the flowers from
the bronze flower-basket, and, with a
slight thrill, she read the verse, en
graved in German script on its gold
and yellow sides —■
“He is the half part of a blessed man,
Left to be finished by such as she;
And she a fair divided excellence
Whose fulness of perfection lies in
him.”
King John. Act 11.
And through some strange, mental
process, she thought of her father’s
groceryman.
With some scorn she pushed away
the innocent flower basket, with its
Shakespearean quotation, and strode
up and down the ornate border of the
Turkish rug twice, pausing at the
arch of blackest ebony wood which
separated the two rooms. The black
ebony arch and the black marble table
were in psychic harmony, and an orna
mental Japanese curtain filled part of
the arch which could be easily swept
aside.
The silent appeal of the great paint
ing drew her back again to the piano.
It seemed to exert hypnotic influences
over her.
For the third or fourth time she
looped back the azure curtain as if
the unveiling of the painting was a
drama, with five acts.
A band or surcingle of white linen
bound the French prisoner to his bed
of doom, in the deadly dungeons of
the Spanish Inquisition, and out of the
blackness above the bed, out of the
thick darkness gleamed a pendulum,
ending in a steel crescent, and to her
