Don’t Buy
An Organ
too hastily. That is, don’t buy
until you have money enough to
get a good one. To buy a cheap
organ where a little more would
get an Estey would be almost like
throwing money away. You’d
have the whole thing to do over
again soon.
Address Estey Brattleboro, Vt.
mason, it was usual for his fellow
workmen to have an occasional treat
of drink, and one day two glasses of
whisky fell to his share, which he
swallowed. When he reached home
he found, on opening his favorite
book, ‘Bacon’s Essays,’ that the let
ters danced before his eyes and that
he could no longer master the sense.”
Mr. Miller, in afterward referring to
that event, said: “The condition into
which I had brought myself was, I
felt, one of degradation. I had sunk,
by my own act, for the time, to a
lower level of intelligence than that
on which it was my privilege to be
placed; and though the state could
have been no very favorable one for
forming a resolution, I, in that hour,
determined that I shall never again
sacrifice my capacity of intellectual
enjoyment to a drinking usage; and,
with God’s help, I was enabled to hold
by the determination.” That was in
deed a timely escape from a peril
which, if not broken from, would have
been most disastrous to the talented
young man. Had he gone on in a
career of intemperance, he would
never have arisen to the great prom
inence which he attained as a geolo
gist. Sir Walter Scott said: “Os all
vices, drinking is the most incompat
ible with greatness.” Multitudes of
very brilliant young men have blasted
their lives by strong drink. If I have
any reader who has begun to indulge
in this vice, I urge him to at once
resolve, as did Hugh Miller, to for
ever escape from it.

MARRYING AND THE COST OF
LIVING.
How much does it cost to live?
There are about as many opinions on
this as there are individuals to guess
on the answer. Not long ago I read
an article in a New York paper in
which it was proved absolutely that
the person who tried to live on $2,000
a year would find himself S2OO behind
every succeeding January 1. The ar
ticle doesn’t explain what would hap
pen if the man didn’t have that S2OO
and couldn’t lose it every year if he
tried, but the assumption is that with
,out it he will drag living down to the
point of existence. He does not deny
that one can exist on less than that,
in fact, a man up Boston way calls at
tention to the fact that one person
can eat at an expense of 20 cents a
day, and get just as nourishing food
as though he spent $2.00 a day. The

trouble with most of us is that we
don’t care for mere existence and
want something more than that.
If in this age the man with civilized
instincts can not afford to marry un
til he gets an income in excess of S4O
a week, the race suicide problem will
become really interesting. Nor is it in
New York only that high standards
are fixed, for a Southerner with only
himself and wife to look out for, and
presumably with fairly modest tastes,
said he couldn’t live decently on less
than that amount in his home city.
For the present, therefore, no doubt it
is advisable for those bachelors who
admit a susceptibility to Southern
feminine charm and fireplace, avoid
the possibility of their ever being per
mitted to work their irresistible if
unconscious influence upon them, alto
gether. Starvation must be a very
unpleasant condition, and when one
longs for lobster a la Broadway bread
and cheese and kisses a la suburbs
must taste very flat.

SCIPIO’S “TENDER RELATIONS.”
A negro presented himself at the

for a license to marry his Dulcinea
Among other problems propounded
him was:
“Are you and the lady related?”
“Yes, sah,” was the answer.
“What relation are you to each oth
