Song of the Happy Country Lass.
W. V LIIUE.
There was a little country lass who
happy seemed to be,
She always went about her work
singing so merrily
‘fou’d never think she had a care nor
sorrow e’er did see,
So brigat and gay the live long day
was she apparently.
S-e never in the least complained of
burdens hard to bear
But was content to others help though
she had done her share.
She never seemed to tire and fret like
some that you have seen
Who’re aiways in a stew and pet about
what might have been.
lais little lassie seemed to have some
where a hidden spring
From whence she drew her happiness
that caused her voice to ring.
In songs of sweetest melody that did
to others bring
A pleasure so supremely sweet as
they listened to her sing.
She sang as if her heart was filled
with music pure sublime,
Inat she had caught from angels lips
so heavenly and divine
Sabed by His Sen, or Willie’s Tirst Bear
By J. R. Musick.
Willie Hardin’s parents lived on
the frontier. By frontier, we mean a
country close to where nobody lives,
but wild anima’s and Indians. They
lived in the edge of a great forest,
and Willie frequently heard the howl
of wolves, the growl of bears, and
loud, unearthly scream cf the pan
ther.
He was only thirteen years of age,
and could just remember of his par
ents leaving a quiet, neat little fann
in a fair Eastern home, and moving
to this wilderness.
He had no brothers; and but one sis
ter— Flory, who was four years young
er than himse’f. They had but few
neghbors, and those they had lived a
distance of several miles away.
Wil'ie was a brisk, wide-awake boy,
and eagerly learned what his mother
taught him in the books, and one day
his father was to send him off to a
school. They had no schools where
he lived.
His father taught him to work in the
fields, to chop down the giant trees in
the woods, and to hunt in the forests
with his small gun.
He never went alone., however. His
father always accompanied him, and
kept his big rifle for the large gime
and fierce animals, while Willie shot
squi rels with his litt’e gun.
One mo ning Willie’s father went
out into the forest, to look for the cow,
which had strayed away. He neglect
ed on this occasion to take his rifle,
as be did not expect to be gone long.
He had been about two miles In the
woods, had found the cow, and w.is
driving her home, when he was at
talked by a large female bear.
His only mode of escape was to
climb a tree which was too sm iH for
the bear. He succeeded in reaching a
good perch, where he was just out of
reach of the enraged, disappointed,
yet determined bear.
With terrible grow’s and fearful dis
play of teeth, ghe coaunenced a cir.
The Golden Age for April 14, 1910.
That those who heard were always
filled with aspiration pure,
And made them wish that all men
would be always good and true.
Now if you would the secret learn of
this girls happiness
Just go and ask her and I’m sure with
smiling countenance
She’d quickly say go live each day for
others as for self
And rest assured that this old world
with all it’s gilded wealth
Is not the source from whicn to get
the strength that you’ll most need
In helping others or yourself in this
life to succeed.
But If you would contented be and a
blessing to others prove,
In faith and love just look above
and xearn the “Golden Rule.”
So friend, if you would happy be just
try to be content
With just such blessings as you have
for they’re in mercy sent,
That you might help some other one
and to them kindly prove
That the truest way in life to live is
to follow the “Golden Rule.”
cuit around the tree. Mr. Hardin ex
pected that she would become tired of
it after a while and retire; but she dis
played an extraordinary amount of
patience, and continued her walk, as
hour after hour wore away.
“I guess I’ll have to camp here for
the night,” said Mr. Hardin.
The tree he was occupying was
small, and his seat in the fork was
very uncomfortable. The bear fre
quently paused in her rounds, and,
rearing up on her hind legs, reached
here great forepaws up the side of
the tree, almost to Mr. Hardin’s feet,
and he then had to draw up his legs to
keep her from biting his toes.
“Mrs. Bruin, I wish you could be
induced to shorten your stay,” said
the discomfitted frontiersman.
But Mrs. Bruin evidently intended
to stay until he came down.
The hours wore on. Noon was past,
and the sun was getting low in the
horizon. The poor man’s discomfiture
was increased by the anxiety he knew
his absence from his family would cre
ate.
The bear seemed just as determin
ed as ever to wait for him to come
down, and sat right at the root of
the tree.
The sun was just going down; but a
few straggling rays of light found
their way among the trees, when the
bear, seeming more determined than
ever, rearing on her hind feet once
more tried the ascent of the tree.
Mr. Hardin was almost entirely un
armed, having nothing but a pocket-
