CHAT.
lAM sure you are all glad to wel
come another of our shut-ins this
week, with his bright, cheerful
words. I am so glad for our depart
ment to furnish a place of pastime
and recreation for these afflicted
ones.
And we are glad to have you back
again, “Naughty Girl,” if you did
bring some hard questions. And your
time in the city was not spent in vain
if you will only let those comparisons
take root and bear fruit in your own
life. Yes, little girl, it is just as
wrong for your city cousins to dance,
play cards or attend theaters as it is
for you in the country. The differ
ence is in the fact that the greater
- portion of our city church meinbers
have let the world and its pleasures
creep in between them and their high
er duty. And this same thing is sap
ping the spiritual life from our
churches more and more as the days
go by.
The question is often asked, What
harm can there be in a social game
of cards, a social dance or a clean
theater? Just this: they draw you
away from God. Your participating
will influence some one, when you
least expect it, to take part who is not
so strong as you perhaps, and hence
will be led into gambling, into reck
less living and fast society because
you gave them the start. “If eating
of meat offend thy brother, then eat
no meat,” for, verily, God has made
us our brother’s keeper.
I am glad you asked the question,
“Naughty Girl,” and I sincerely hope
your visit to the city will be the
means of making you draw more care
fully the lines of your duty as a ch'ld
of God rather than to make you, like
your city cousins, grow more lax.
Remember, we “can not serve God
and mammon.” There are but two
spirits, one of God, one of Satan. He
that is not for Christ is against Him.
LITTLE MOTHER.
I?
ONE’S SELF IS TO
BE HAPPY.”
Dear Little Mother: Here I come
again, just to have a bit of chat. I
get very lonesome here in my bed, so
you see it is quite a treat for me to
drop in for a few minutes, just to chat

a little with our “Little Mother” and
the “Voices of Youth.”
The greatest trouble with me when
writing to any one or to papers is
that I have nothing new to tell
them —only something about myself,
and that is a very poor subject. As I
have written so much about myself, I
find the following to be very helpful
in time of trouble or any other time:
“To forget one’s self is to be happy.”
Let’s all of us try this and see if it
isn’t better than “self-thinking.” I
wish all of you could take a peep at
the mountains now and pluck for
yourselves the modest violets or some
of the beautiful wild honeysuckles
that cover their surface now. Don’t
forget that “to forget one’s self is to
be happy.” Christ thought not of
Himself. Your shut-in friend of the
mountains in middle Tennessee,

SOME REAL QUESTIONS.
Hello, Little Mother; how are you
and the Circle getting along without
your “Naughty Girl?” I am sorry I’ve
been so bad and stayed away so long,
but I’ve been “runned” away to see
my “city kinery,” and we were going
about at such a rate—l didn’t forget
you—no, “Little Mother,” but I just
didn’t have time to write. Oh! and
let me tell you, I went to the nicest
party—no, entertainment they called
it —and I met the nicest young doctor
you most ever saw; but I wouldn’t
have my home folks know I liked him
for anything, so you won’t tell, will
you, “Little Mother?” They wouldn’t
let me go back any more. But this
was not the most important thing
that happened during my visit by
any means. That thing that impressed
me most in the city life as compared
with country life was the difference
in the way the church members live.
