Some Interesting Facts About Sum
mer Pests.
The “good old summer time” would
be without a flaw if it could be had
without the thousand and one bugs
and insects that always accompany
the summer season and torture the
life out of man and beast.
These bugs keep quiet during the
day, but the minute darkness comes
on and a light is made in the house
they begin their deadly work. It can
truly be designated “deadly work,” for
the bite of these insects is, in a great
many instances, fatal. This applies
more to the mosquito than any of the
others. The mosquito is equipped
with a long, saw-like bill, with a
needle point, that is rank poison, and
in this bill is also carried the fever
germ. The mosquito bite is, there
fore, deadly poison.
It is impossible to prevent their ap
pearance in the summer season; but
to keep them from biting you, or to
cure the bite —that is, by the use of
“Skee-ter-go,” an a-styp-to-dyne pre
paration. “Skee-ter-go” drives off
mosquitoes, gnats and all other in
sects, and kills immediately the itch
ing pain produced by insect bites.

Hesterville, Miss.
Dear Little Mother: Well, I am
back again, and I am at the very place
I want to be especially at the present.
You can plainly see that I am very
fond of chatting. However, I haven’t
anything very interesting for our dear
circle and Little Mother; simply want
to feel the joy of your company for
awhile. I can say one thing, I am
still confined to my bed in which I
have been for over two years; that’s
more than some of you can say and
I am sure you are willing for me to
excel in this one thing at least. I
shall be very glad indeed when real
warm weather comes, so I can be out
some in my wheel chair. Oh! I know
it must be nice indeed to be out in
God’s beautiful garden of nature and
be fanned by (he balmy breezes while
you feast your eyes on the many-hued
flowers. I enjoy even the view which
1 get from my bedroom window, and
am very thankful for the many bless
ings that come my way. What are we
for but to love and help one another?
The Lord gets His best soldiers from
the highlands of affliction, so 1 take
comfort, knowing that if I can not be
permitted to work for Him, I can suf
fer as He would have me, and be
happy. I find the following to be a
good motto:
“On Christ, the solid rock, I stand,
All other ground is sinking sand.”
I am still enjoying the weekly visits
of the dear Golden Age. It’s a great
blessing to receive such a good pa
per.
Now, Dear Cousins, wishing each of
you and Little mother much happi
ness, I am,
Your shut in friend,
WM. M. GALLOWAY.

TEACHING MEDICINE BY EXPERI
MENTS AND PRACTICE.
The Medical Student of even ten
years ago could hardly have dreamed
of the remarkable advance in the
methods and facilities for teaching
medicine and surgery as now present
ed by the combined Medical College of
the University of Nashville, and the
University of Tenessee, Nashville,
Tenn. These two leading institutions
have united their faculties, laborato
ries and hospital facilities, thus giving
the medical student opportunities far
in advance of the times.
For example, the new catalogue of
the combined school shows twelve lab
oratory courses in which by actual ex
periment the student proves for him
self the truths of medical science. In
addition to the lectures and laboratory
courses, the advanced students (third
and fourth years) spend about three
hours each day in the hospital wards
and dispensary, examining patients,
making diagnoses, assisting in treat
ment and watching the progress of
cases. During the student’s fourth
year of study he must also serve a
term in the hospital as interne, living
in the hospital and working under the
direction of the House Surgeon. Thus
acquiring a familiarity with hospital
methods which could not otherwise
be obtained.
