The Knapp Extract Co.,
is so regarded by these people, and this
is His first defense. First, he.defends
Jesus Christ on the basis of His works.
He appeals to them first on the very
lowest possible plain; the plain that
appeals to the human. Then He
points them to the signs that He
worked and the miracles that He per
formed, reminding them that none but
God could have so done; then He re
minds them of His crucifixion, and
then tells them of His resurrection
and ascension and of His reigning at
the right hand of God the Father. He
clinches this by reference to prophetic
teaching.
Then, he says, “Jesus, the ascended
Lord, now that He has gone back to
God the Father, hath poured forth
this.”
“He hath poured forth this.” And
so, while we talk about the Holy
Spirit, let us never forget that Jesus
is back of the Holy Spirit, and that
the Holy Spirit is His medium with
the world today.
Following this explanation of the
mystery comes the answer to ques
tions. Peter stopped right in the midst
of his sermon to answer questions.
When he assured them that all this
that they had seen was the fulfill
ment of prophecy, and that it was Je
sus the ascended Lord, who still rules
and reigns, working through the
Spirit, then those in the audience who
were convinced, cried, “What shall we
do that we, too, may have this pow
er?” Peter’s answer to them caihe,
“Repent and be baptized, every one
of you, in the name of Jesus Christ,
unto the remission of sins, and you
shall receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit.”
They wanted this power that would
enable them to do these marvelous
things; they wanted this supernatural
power that made light shine upon the
disciples and gave them the gift of
tongues. They wanted the marvelous
manifestation of the Spirit. Peter
began to instruct them concerning
deeper motives. They were first in
terested, then instructed. “Repent
and be baptized, every one of you,
unto the remission of your sins.”
They must first consider the question
of getting rid of sin, and then, “Ye
shall receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit, for to you is the promise and
to your children and to them that are
afar off, even as many as the Lord
our God shall call unto Him.”
THE SERMON PREACHED.
This gift of the Spirit is a different
thing from salvation. It is separate
entirely. It may be wrapped up in
salvation. I think in the economy of
God it is. I think provisionally a
man receives the gift of the Spirit
when he receives Jesus Christ, but
though he provisionally receives the
Holy Spirit, he does not experiment
ally receive Him. A man may re
ceive Jesus Christ and never experi
mentally enjoy the full gift of the
Spirit.
You may receive a deed to a piece
of property. On that property there
may be a gold mine, but you do not
know it until somebody points it out
to you, and then you begin to appro
priate what you have had all the time.
You will observe also that it is a
gift for everybody, not only for preach
ers, teachers, workers in the church
of Jesus Christ, but it is a gift for
everybody, man, woman and child,
that names the name of Jesus Christ.
Oh, how the church itself needs this
gift. How the world waits today to
see the church not only saved, but
tilled with the Spirit to the extent

that the individuals stand out in this
rationalistic world as so many ques
tion marks’ How I need it, and how
you need it! Oh, if the church today
was a spirit filled body we would
shake this world.
What was the result of this? What
was the result of this pouring forth
of the Spirit?
First, there is the adding of the
three thousand souls. They were
saved and immediately added to the
church. Then they continued stead
fastly in prayer, breaking of bread
and in fellowship.
They continued day by day in glad
ness of heart, and the Lord added to
them such as would be saved. Here
we have the establishment of the first
Christian church, and we find this as
the first purpose of that church un
der the direct teaching of the Spirit
of God, setting us an example as to
how we are to construct our plans
today. Then we have as encourage
ment the fact that, day by day, not
simply on the Lord’s day and during
revival occasions, but day by day, the
unsaved people, join in and swell the
ranks of the army of the Lord.

mechanical movement, or she would

“Very well,” she acquiesced, in a
voice that she did not recognize as her
own, “that will be my name tonight,
in this unreal, romantic world —of
stars and roses. Tomorrow I will try
to forget . . . try not to remember
. . . that you called me . . . Pro
serpina. Why did you call me that?”
“It is so beautiful,” he said simply.
“And then she was stolen from a field
of flowers —was she not?’’ His eyes
were gravely fixed on the roses.
“I believe so. But this is June mad
ness. And this garden, Pluto,” with
the shadow of a smile about her lips,
“is magic.”
“Magic?” he questioned. “Good,
Lord! yes! It is so full of magic,
that I am beginning to forget, that I
am I, and you are you . . . and
that I have no chance to win you,
Proserpina.”
She spilled crimson rose leaves over
her white dress, and, undei- her silken
lashes tne slow tears gathered, and
the sweet mist of them made Arcturus
into a rounded sun.
“There is always and ever, for the
brave, the fighting chance,” she sug
gested, sweetly.
He threw the stump of his cigar over
the bronze urn. It scattered red sparks
like a small comet, where it fell in the
short, dew-soaked grass. The game
was getting interesting. He did not
believe that he would go to the banks
of Millwood creek, and fall in that
night.
He came around to her side of the
urn, and leaned his athletic shoulder
against it. Then, by mutual consent,
they circled the urn, found a conven
ient iron bench. The influence of the
night, soft and gentle, was upon them.
She made no move to resist him,
when he took her hand. Arcturus
flamed a deeper white, near the zenith,
as if a wave of more than ordinary joy
had struck him.
“Proserpina, I feel desperately like
I am going to forget all barriers and
make love co you.”
She looked at him, over her pretty,
bare shoulder, just moving the satin
strap that upheld her dress, with a
slight shrug.
“This is only the second meeting,
Pluto.”

“I can’t help that. My love for you
began aeons before the first meeting,
dear heart. Night and day I have wor
shipped the vision of you, since I saw
you there —asleep on the banks of Mill
wood creek. I am speaking to you,
out of my heart, here in this unreal
world, ot romance and roses. The
barriers that divide us have been burn
ed away. The gulfs filled. It is some
thing to have lived and loved, so fer
vently, one so pure and noble as your
self. No words, Proserpina, can de
scribe the worship that I feel for you.’-
She unconsciously pressed his hand
with an answering sympathy.
“The very helplessness of this great
love that I have for you proserpina
makes it outweigh all other loves
and lovers. Through the long night
vigils, I have called your name, and
rose with the dawn to pace a garden
path beneath the shade of young
apple trees, your name still burning
on my lips.”
“You poor boy! Was it like that?”
Then, her dark eyes regarding him,
mischievously—
“ That was fever, Pluto, not love.”
