Somebody has made the illuminat
ing statement that electricity is as old
as the flood. The proof lies in the
fact that Noah was obliged to have
ark lights. Be that as it may, I am
of the same mind that possessed the
old farmer when he unwittingly
boarded a car reserved for a party of
college graduates. The jolly girls
were returning to their alma mater
for some special event. Refresh
ments in large quantities were passed
about in the car, and the old farmer
was invited to partake. Finally some
one asked hm: “Are you an alum
nus?”
“No,” said the farmer, earnestly,
“but I believe in it.”
Since our aforetime residence has
been converted into a temporary hos
pital, it has been necessary for me to
patronize the electrics “right fre
quent,” as Uncle Josh Billings would
say, in order to keep the Piney
Woods Sketches from disappearing in
the midst of a desert of dense gloom.
A delightful break in the sick-room
routine came a few days ago in the
form of a call by Mr. K. D. Stucken
brok, in charge of the Seaman’s Mis
sion, in Brunswick, Ga. I had known
of this consecrated gentleman for
some time, but it had not been my
pleasure to know him personally until
his recent visit. He is a tonic to tired
nerves; an impetus to fagged energy,
and brimful of the kind of cheerful,
convincing inspirat on that makes you
feel like you can make your mark in
the world, whether you succeed in
writing your name high in its annals
or not.
Mr. Stuckenbrok is a native Ger
man. His broken dialect betrayeth

SUGGESTIVE THOUGHTS.
What should I do?
I. Consider the Two Sowers. Vs.
24 and 25, 35, 38 and 39.
Ln the last lesson we saw that the
sower was the Holy Spirit and Jesus
the seed, and human hearts the soil.
In this parable there are two sowers.
The first is the Lord Jesus, the seed
of the former parable, who sows the
good seed. The second sower is the
devil, who, after Jesus has sown the
good seed, comes and sows the evil
seed. Jesus did his sowing in the light
and openly. He had nothing to hide.
The devil sowed at night while the
owner of the field slumbered and slept.
His deeds were evil, therefore he sow
ed in the darkness. Jesus sows that
which will bless and save man. The
devil sows that wh : ch will curse and
damn man.
11. Consider the Seed. Vs. 26 to 28
and 38.
In the first parable there was only
one seed, and that seed was Christ,

him, but his mastery of good Ameri
can gab makes him decidedly more
voluble than the man who went into
the music store to make some pur
chases for his wife.
Approaching the waiting clerk,
without prelude or postlude, he de
manded: “Mikado libretto.”
The clerk stared. “What’s that?”
he asked.
“Mikado libretto,” said Jones-of
few-words again.
“Me no spik de Italian,” said the
clerk, with an apologetic smile.
It was good to gather some infor
mation, first hand, concerning the
work that is be ng done in the mis
sion, and it was peculiarly invigorat
ing to get it from one who is so en
thusiastically and intelligently in
formed on the subject.
While our statesmen and politicians
are puzzling their brains with imprac
ticable theories concerning the immi
gration problems, this unassuming son
of foreign birth is quietly but effec
tively solving it. In his report for
1909 Mr. Stuckenbrok shows that the
mission has supplied free meals to 153
men, free lodgings to 113; has dis
tributed 329 packages of wholesome
literature, 27 Bibles and 1,883 other
religious wopks; 106 religious services
have been held, with an attendance of
3,897 persons, many of whom were
happily converted. Among the con
verts not a few have returned to their
homes determined to become mission
aries in their respective fatherlands.
The mission work has been main
ta ned solely by public subscription
and the untiring work of Mr. Stuck
enbrok and his courageous little wife.
The present building in which the
ers. (Gal. 3:16; John 12:23, 24; John
10:10; 1 John 5:11, 12.) In this para
ble we have many seed, but only two
kinds of seed —good seed and bad
seed. First, The good seed are the
sons of the Kingdom, which are sowed
by Christ. The sons of the Kingdom
are those who received Jesus, the
true seed from Heaven, sown by the
Holy Ghost. They are sons of God
and heirs of the Kingdom. Jesus is
the seed from Heaven, through which
all nations of the earth shall be
blessed. (Gal. 3:14-16.) By receiving
Jesus into our hearts and lives, we be
come the seed that Jesus sows in all
lands as the channel of blessing to the
world. If we change the figure we’
hear Jesus saying: “I am the light of
the world.” (John 8:12; John 9:5.)
Again He says, “Ye are the light of
the world.” (Matt. 5:14.) By receiv
ing Jesus, the true light-redeemed
man becomes the light of the world.
Second, The bad seed. The seed
sown by the evil one are the sons of
the devil. (John 8:44; 1 John 3:10.)
Wherever Jesus has sown His seed
the devil has followed and sown his
seed also. Wherever Jesus plants a
good man, Satan plants a bad man
right by his side.
The Darnel.—The word for tares
ought to be translated “darnel.” (See
Matt.l3:2s, R. V. margin.) This is a
weed that grows with the wheat in
that country, and is so much like
wheat that you can not tell the differ
ence until it blooms. This blossom
has a peculiar poison, which the wind
scatters over the wheat and destroys

mission is housed is inadequate and
poorly suited to the work. Mr. Stuck
enbrok is exceedingly anxious to have
better quarters before the winter sea
son opens. He is devoting his time
and talent in an effort to raise the
funds that will be needed to provide
a more desirable home for his beloved
sailor lads, and he deserves the cor
dial, hearty sympathy and support of
every Christian man, woman and
ch Id in the South who are vitally
alive to the dangers that threaten us
if the seething influx of foreigners
are not Christianized and American
ized in the purest and most patriotic
sense. These lighthouses scattered
along the shores of our seaport towns
mean more than we think or can real
ize toward the . solving of problems
that will soon be gigantic in their
proportions if the solving is not be
gun in earnest now and carried on
with painstaking and unremitt ng
care.

LIKE SOME OTHER EPITAPHS.
“I was called in by a close-fisted old
merchant the other day,” a Boston
lawyer remarked, smiling. “He
wanted me to draw his will, and this
its fru tage. This is what the devil
is doing —planting the seed with the
poisonous blossom that destroys the
fruitage of the sons of the Kingdom.
These children of Satan may be men
and women of great culture and re
finement, they may have many good
traits of character, but not having re
ceived Christ, the good seed from
Heaven, into their hearts and lives,
they have the poisonous blossoms that
destroy the fruitful life of the sons of
th Kingdom.
111. Consider the Field. V. 39.
In the first parable the soil or field
was the hearts of men; in this one
the world is the field. Jesus says,
“As thou hast sent me into the world,
even so have I also sent them into
the world.” (John 17:18.) He has
sent the sons of the kingdom into all
the world. (Mark 16:15, 16.) The
world is “His field.” (Psalms 24:1.)
The devil does not own an inch of
ground. He sows his seed in anoth
er’s field. While the Church sleeps
the devil is busy planting his seed in
the field that belongs to Christ and
the sons of the Kingdom. Sleepy
headedness causes the Church to fa 1
to appreciate and take advantage of
her opportunities to win men for the
Kingdom. While the Church sleeps
the devil is wide awake doing his
deadly work. He never sleeps—not
even in church.
IV. Consider the Harvest. Vs. 29
43.
The Kingdom is not the Church;
the field is not the Church; therefore
the words, “Lpt both grow together
I proceeded to do, following his verbal
instruction. Presently he said:
“ ‘To each and every clerk who has
been in my employ for ten years I
give $10,000.’ ,
“This seemed like a considerable
sum to me, and I ventured a slight
protest, as he had a number of daugh
ters, and his entire fortune was not
large.
“ ‘Oh, that’s all right,” he said, with
a little crooked smile. ‘You know peo
ple have always said that I was close
and hard, and I want them to think
well of me when I’m gone.’
“I was a little touched and said
something, but he waved it aside and
we continued with the draft. When
it was finished and as I was about to
leave the office, the old fellow smiled
again his little crooked sm le.
“‘About those SIO,OOO legacies,’ he
said, ‘there isn’t a clerk in my place
who has been with me over two years
—but it will look well in the pa
pers’’ ”

until the harvest,” does not refer to
Church discipline. The harvest is the
end of the age. The wicked and the
good will go on in the world to the
end. Some will be getting better and
some getting worse. The King is
coming and will send forth His an
gels and gather out of His Kingdom
all things that offend and them that
do iniquity and cast them into the
furnace of fire. When these sons of
Satan have been taken out, then
“shall the righteous shine forth as
the sun in the Kingdom of their Fa
ther.” During this age the sons of
evil shine.
V. Consider How the Sons of Evil
Can Be Made Sons of the Kingdom.
These sons of evil can be made sons
of the Kingdom by receiving Jesus
the King into their hearts. So let
us go with this message to all men.
