“LovlNg Mad euhEb me.”
I hurried along oil a busy day,
Racing the zenith sun;
Nor greeted a boy by the dusty way,
Brimming with honest fun.
I ’ay all awake through the darkest
night
Thinking of work undone —
The boy was asleep at the candle-light,
Dreaming ’till morning sun.
I walked afield on a morning hour,
Knitting my'brow in thought;
Nor noticed a modest and fragrant
flower
Op’ni’ng with ease untaught.
I tossed abed with a throbbing brain,
Ageing a youthful face;
The flowerlet though was all closed
again,
Growing a fresher grace.
I wearily turned from a baffling part,
Wondering if skill were mine;
Nor heeded the strains of songster’s
heart,
Trilling in notes divine.
I brooded for hours in doubtful mood,
Wearing my strength away—
The birdlet had flown to a neighboring
wood,
Resting ’till break of day.
I suffered for weeks with my nerves
astrain,
Wasting the wine of life;
Nor knew surcease of the rasping
pain,
Born of the daily strife.
I opened my ears and the bird was
near
Singing as sweetest lay;
And sleep! the elixir was in the air,
Soothing my grief away.
I opened my eyes on the simple flower,
Smiling serenely on;
And rest! dll my nerves were afresh
with power,
Twitching and pain all gone.
I opened my heart to the happy boy
Laughing in artless glee—
Then peace! ’twas a burst of the pur
est joy,
Loving had cured me.

A DOUBTFUL COMPLIMENT.
A lady in Virginia, who in her early
days had been surrounded by luxury
and had had many slave attendants,
was in later life much amused by a col
ored waitress anxious to be pleasant.
The latter, who prided herself on
never failing to discern “quality” from
“pore white trash,” feelingly remark
ed: “You could tell, Mrs. Blank, that
you had been accustomed to associat
ing with colored folks all your life!”
