Mr. H. O. Carlton, Zolfo, Fia., says:
“I found the Georgia-Alabama an ideal
training school. I had been a book
keeper and stenographer for several
years before taking my course there.
I made $284 while studying short
hand in that institution. Its adver
tising matter is so conservative that
a student always is surprised at how
much more he finds there than he is
led to expect before going.”
This college has a fund for taking
high grade young people, letting them

The Lady Trom Alabama
(Continued Trom Page Three)
she discovered too late that she had
no desire to leave at all. The pic
ture of “The First Easter Morn,” be
tween the windows, her little white
iron bed, the low rocker, and all the
other dainty girlish belongings, seem
ed to have been anchored, in the saf
est and best harbor in the world.
And Miss Lowell and Miss Dillard’s
affection and care for her, as well as
the humble devotion of the mill peo
ple, all were reckoned as things of
priceless value now, after they were
doomed to vanish out of her grasp.
Schiller had given Miss Dillard only
a part of the truth, as she had sus
pected, in regard to her resignation.
The fundamental reason was a secret,
Known only to her own heart. Un
der the sweep and violence of her
emotions, evolved out of the thought
of being once more adrift on the dark
world-currents, Schiller passed a sleep
less and unhappy night. Once she
got up, and slipping into her kimono,
sat down by the window and watched
the stars, trying to gather strength
from the thought of the wisdom and
power betrayed in the glory revealed
in the blue October heavens.
“I wish that my faith,” she sighed,
clasping and unclasping her white
hands, “did not falter so, in the cru
cial time of crisis. I am sure that I
have asked for guidance, and I felt
impelled as well as compelled, to send
in my resignation. The Lord has
assured us, that the very hairs of our
head are all numbered. Think, my
heart, what intimate personal knowl
edge that suggests! And He declares
that not even a sparrow falls to the
ground without His notice, so that
even an insignificant young woman
like myself, need not feel overlooked.
At least, I have God, and one friend,
whom I do not think will fail me.” .
And having turned the character of
her meditations into a more trustful
channel, she quietly lit the gas, and,
taking down her beautiful blond hair,
she combed and plaited it into two
long braids, which she left pendent
so as to keen her head cool, which
still throbbed from over us the nerv
ous excitement of her mood. After
that, she knelt by the little white iron
bed, for a time, and then, having
grown calmer she threw herself full
length down upon it, and went to
sleep like a child.
The next morning Schiller took the
car for “Overlook” in rather a more
harmonious state of mind. She was
going to her friend, Mrs. Howell, to
lay her case before her. She knew
that it might have been better, pos
sibly, had she consulted her, before
taking the final step; but since she had
neglected to do it, she was willing
to risk the consequences, because she
believed, unconditionally, in the loy
alty of Mrs. Howell’s friendship.
After the long journey on the car
had been covered, Schiller went
through the iron gates of Overlook
with a deep, conscious sense of enjoy
ment, and freedom from care, which
were a kind of psychological surprise
to her. But she was young, and the
beauty of the flower beds flashing
along the wide, white avenue, like the
blending notes of a colorful symphony,
struck a response from her own heart,

that she had no power to resist. It
was the Magna Mater’s proclamation
on this fair October day, “that God
was in heaven and the world all right.”
She found Mrs. Howell on her par
lor porch, sewing on a dainty piece of
lingerie.
“What is the matter?” Mrs. Howell
asked, as she shook hands with her
friend, smilingly. “Have the Hall Cot
ton Mills gone on a strike?”
“No; but I have,” Schiller replied,
as she dropped into a luxurious rock
ing chair, “and I have come to you,
to absolve me. In brief, I have re
signed.”
“Why, Schiller Wilkins, how could
you? I thought that you and Carroll
Hall were the best of friends, and
that you had a berth for life. June
Churchill informed me that he has
been working like mad for months,
employing hundreds of hands in or
der to remodel the Mill village, and
turn it into a place of desirable habi
tation. And now, just as it is be
coming an accomplished fact, you turn
your back on your new and beautiful
environment and come here to me, to
try to make me believe that your
royal highness does not approve of it;
that the change does not accord with
your ideas of the eternal fitness of
things.”
“No, no! That is not it, Mrs. How
ell,” Schiller replied, for she knew
her friend was simply trying to tease
her. “But while I endorse heartily
all the improvements which the Mill
President has inaugurated (especially
that delightful reserve, the Hall An
nex), still I feel out of harmony with
the situation, and I know I do not be
long there, any longer.”
“Well, in that event,” her friend
said, as she reached over and took
her hand, “you belong to me again. I
need you, really. Olive has gone to
Europe, as you know, with a party of
friends, and I have been at home, so
much of late, that I shall be very
charmed to have you for a long visit.”
“Yes, that is good for you, but you
know I can not afford to rest long.”
“A month’s vacation will not hurt
you. And, besides, Mr. McArthur
asked me, not long ago, if 1 could
not find you some work to do on our
magazine. So, I have been thinking
that I need a secretary, and maybe, if
you are very good, little girl, I‘ll take
you on the staff.”
“Why,” Schiller exclaimed, “that is
lovely—like a Cinderella deliverance —
you surely can’t mean it. But I could
not stay in that office a day longer.
Last night I stayed awake all night
thinking over my helplessness, my al
most friendless state, and this morn
ing, lo! the pricess waves her fairy
wand, and I am appointed, as by mag
ic, to the place I desire most of all
things. In other words, I am to be
associated with you, the best and dear
est friend I have on the glad, green
earth. Selah.”

A Sufferer for Twelve Months.
Every other had failed: “We had
just as soon be without quinine as to
be out of Hughes’ Chill Tonic. One of
the most wonderful cures of chi'ls and
fever came under my observation. A
man suffering for about twelve months
from a most obstinate attack of chills
and fever tried every remedy that he
could hear of, all to no purpose. I
persuaded him to try a bottle of
Hughes’ Tonic; from that time, over
twelve months ago, he has not had a
chill.” Sold by Druggists—soc. and
