SOCIALIST COLONY.
Progress Retarded —Ambition Smoth
ered.
There is a sect located in lowa who
own in common possibly 10,000 acres
of good farming land. They have
woolen mills, grist mills and other
factories and shops; and have for
many years more than held their own.
But the superintendent some thirty
years ago in answer to an inquiry by
the writer, acknowledged that he real
ized that their community had a very
great advantage by having a progres
sive and inactive world around them,
that their system smothered ambition,
and would necessarily retard progress,
that many of their most ambitious
young men and women drifted away,
where ambition and energetic work
might bring them something tetter
than a mere living. On their farms
they have the most modern implements
and in their factories, mills and shops
the latest and best machinery and
* equipment. Had all the world lived
in common after the manner of these
people tfeere would be no incentive
for improved methods, and this same
community would today be plowing
with a crooked stick and spinning
their yarns on the old foot-power spin
ning wheel. The scope of civil govern
ment is simply to protect person and
property, and make possible a good
living and a home as the reward of
faithful, industry and right living to
every citizen under its jurisdiction.
