VOICES OF YOUTH
CONDUCTED BY MRS. G. B. LINDSEY.
The want within my soul was calm
When I saw you.
Your vision fell as Gilead’s balm
When I saw you.
The world ne’er saw a fairer morn,
The flowers, methinks, did ne’er
adorn
With lovelier grace than when was
born
My love for you.
Before, the sun was ne’er so bright
Till I saw you.
I never saw its golden light
Till I met you.
The spark within my soul was dead,
My soul was heavy as the lead
Which lies within its dank, deep bed
Till I saw you.
CHAT.
My Dear Boys and Girls:
Good news for you. Your Little
Mother is sitting up and says she will
have a nice chat with you next week.
I know you will rejoice to welcome
her to your corner again.
Your Brother Willie sends his love
to each and every one of you. He has
not forgotten you, nor his promise to
talk to you through your department,
but he is out of the office all the time
now in lecture and prohibition work,
and I seldom get to talk to him myself.
So we will just have to accept his
statement that he is loving us, and be
patient until he has more time.
Lovingly,
“SISTER MARGARET.’’

Dear Little Mother: I am really and
truly ashamed of myself for not writ
ing, after you asked us so kindly, but,
some way, I just kept putting it off
until it was too late.
I am always doing that way. It’s a
bad habit, and I’m going to break my
self of it, and so will begin by writing
you a letter before I go back to school,
which is to begin Monday.
I -would be glad if it wasn’t that I
had to be away from home, for I love
home better than any other place, and
I know that I have as happy a home
and as sweet brothers, sisters and
parents as anybody.
I only had three months’ vacation,
and I think I enjoyed every minute of
the time, except about a month, and I
was real sick with my throat then.
However, aftei’ having my tonsils re
moved, I am well and feel as well, if
not better, than ever. I spent two
weeks on St. Simon’s Island, at Bruns
wick, Ga., and I enjoyed my trip to
the fullest extent. We went in bath
ing nearly every day, and sometimes
at night. I learned to swim, and I
could float a little.
I am very fond of water, so you
know I enjoyed my sea baths.
On my way home I stopped for a
few days at Waycross, and would,
have liked to stay longer, but, as my
aunt and cousin from Washington,
D. C., also an uncle from Pouland,
that I hadn’t seen in a long time, were
here, I hurried on home.
Mamma went to grandma’s and left
papa, my two sisters and me to keep
house. Says she didn’t know we
could keep house so good, but I think
they all had a slight attack of indiges
tion from eating my cooking, although
they didn’t say much about it.
You see, I am a young housekeeper,
and not such an experienced one, so I

But now the birds sing in the trees,
Since I saw you.
Their music mingles with the breeze,
Since I saw you.
I see the smile on every face,
I catch the movement full of grace,
I can all beauty now embrace
Since I saw you.
Your eyes mean aspirations high
That I love you;
Your smile stays after your good-bye;
’Tis part of you.

guess they didn’t want to discourage
me too badly.
We have missed Little Mother’s
talks, although we have enjoyed Sister
Margaret’s chats.
Just know I’m going to like “Trial
and Triumph”, for M. E. B.’s other
piece was so good and this one has
made such a good beginning.
Where is all our large family?
Seems as if they have all forgotten our
corner. And Brother Willie, too, he
promised to come back again, and it
would never do for him not to stick
up to his word.
I’ll have to go now, and I’ll come
again when I can’t stay so long.
Lovingly,
INEZ BALKCOM.

Dear Little Mother, Brothers and
Sisters: I have just been reading
Chat from “Sister Margaret”, and de
cided I would come in and have a
talk with you all this morning. I was
certainly sorry to learn of Little
Mother’s sickness, but hope she is bet
ter ere this.
We closed a meeting at our church
a week ago, with thirteen additions to
the church. We had a right good
meeting. We had three ministers with
us. Among them was Rev. R. J. Huff,
from Winder. He certainly delivered
some fine sermons.
Now, I must tell you all what a
nice time I had Friday. School closed.
We met about 8:30 a. m., sat around
and talked, practiced our speaking
and review lessons till 12 o’clock, then
we gathered our baskets and carried
them to a nice, cool place and spread
our lunch, which, of course, was nice.
After dinner we had speaking in the
grove. Then all returned home, feel
ing a whole lot better.
What has become of our debate,
also our badges? Why don’t more of
the cousins write and tell us what
they think? Guess you are all like
me: just waiting for some one who
can write better; but don’t wait; we
are glad to hear from any of you.
Let’s all write and make Little Mother
feel proud of her children while she
can’t be with us. I, too, have begun
to believe Bro. Willie has forgotten
