DO WE EAT TO LIVE OR LIVE TO
EAT?
Often it is debated as to whether we
“live to eat or eat to live,” the correct
solution of which depends on how we
execute this function of our existence.
If-we merely respond to the demands
of nature for sustenance, then we eat
to live; but if we employ the art of
cooking that we may enjoy eating,
tn< n indeed we eat to live.
The national government and state
authorities are taking much interest in
pure food products, and we are learn
ing what to eat and drink, and what
to avoid for the benefit of our health,
to live the limit of the life allotted to
humanity. We are also learning the
best way of cooking approved foods
for human consumption. The perfect
assimilation of food depends much
upon proper cooking and seasoning,
and to disregard such produces a very
unhappy state, but generally resulting
in indigestion.
Variety of food is the enemy of indi
gestion, but this variety should not
consist of meats and bread alone; the
system needs stimulating as well as
nourishing food, or, in other words,
meats, breads, and vegetable products.
The best results obtained from the use
of vegetable products are when prop
erly seasoned and cooked in their nat
ural state, but when conditions render
them impossible to procure in their
natural state, science has added va
rious ways to preserve them; one of
the most important is the successful
preservation of Mexican Chili Pepper
in a dried powdered form, and wher
ever introduced it has completely rev
olutionized kitchen recipes in which
spices of the pepper family are used.
Mexican Chili Pepper is only known
outside of its native country, and was
heretofore termed impossible to pre
serve so as to keep its natural flavor
and pungency. When the peppers
commence to ripen they have a beau
tiful scarlet red color and are about
four to six inches long. At this stage
it is cured and dried, after which the
peppers assume a brown —almost black
—appearance; it was in this stage we
heretofore knew Mexican Chili Pep
per.
What is termed “Chili Flavor” is
really not the pepper alone, its pecu
liar fine flavor is obtained after add
ing certain quantities of Mexican
spices and herbs. After knowing the
above you will readily understand why
Gebhardt’s Eagle Chili Powder is hail
ed with delight by every housewife
who desires to use this popular flavor.
In the manufacture of Gebhardt’s Ea
gle Chili Powder we use only the finest
goods that can be procured. Our Chili

and San Luis Potosi, Mexico, at which
places we have our drying and curing

lecting, and all the different stages of
manufacture are under our direct su
pervision.

THEN AND NOW.
The moon is shining bright tonight,
The stars are dim and few,
And on the sleeping flowers and grass
Falls silently the dew.
A mockingbird, hid in a tree,
Is singing, soft and low,
And as I listen, through my soul
Old saddening memories flow.
On such a night I watched the moon,
And she was by my side:
Tonight I sit alone and she —
She died another’s bride.

EASIER WORK FOR HOT
WEATHER.
It is hard to-keep furniture dusted
and polished but I delight in it. 1
take a soft, damp cloth and rub off
my furniture after it has been dusted,
then take another woolen cloth and
dampen it with spirits of turpentine
and kerosene, and rub the furniture
again. It will leave an unpleasant
ordor in the room, but in a short time
it is all gone and you have a nice
sweet room.
I have a Spotless washing machine.
I like it splendidly. I do all the house
work and get through washing by 2
o’clock, and stop to cook dinner.
I have a smoothing iron heater
that is another great article. I wish
every sister farmer had one. It
saves wood and trouble and the ironer,
on the warm days in the summer
from being worried so much from
the heat. They sell for $2.50. Any I
one wishing to have one can just ad
dress the Smoothing Iron Heater Co.,
Sumter, S. C. The company will pay
the freight on one to any place on re
ceipt of $2.50.

MAGNETS IN SALVAGE WORK.
Some time ago a bargeload of
kegged nails sank in the Mississippi
river near New Orleans. How to re
cover the cargo cheaply gave the own
ers no little concern. Finally a clever
electrical engineer hit on the idea of
employing powerful electric lifting
magnets. He rigged up a magnet
three and one-half feet in diameter,
weighing three thousand pounds. The
magnet was dropped into the stream,
the current was turned on, and five
or six kegs of nails were lifted at a
time. The nails weighed two hundred
pounds to the keg. Hence, twelve
hundred pounds of nails clung to the
magnet whenever it was raised. About
90 per cent, of the cargo was thus re
covered, valued at forty-five dollars a
ton.
Here is an English recipe for orange
marmalade:
Boil two dozen large, sour oranges
till quite sost —about three hours.
Then chop them quite fine, taking out
the seeds.
Make syrup of sixteen pounds of
sugar, juice and grated peel of four
lemons and seven quarts of water. Let
syrup boil till quite thick, then put in
the oranges. Boil altogether a half
hour, watching very carefully lest it
burn. This will supply a family of
moderate size for the winter.
Some Interesting Facts About Sum
mer Pests.
The “good old summer time” would
be without a flaw if it could be had
without the thousand and one bugs
and insects that always accompany
the summer season and torture the
life out of man and beast.
These bugs keep quiet during the
day, but the minute darkness comes
on and a light is made in the house
they begin their deadly work. It can
truly be designated “deadly work,” for
the bite of these insects is, in a great
many instances, fatal. This applies
more to the mosquito than any of the
others. The mosquito is equipped
with a long, saw-like bill, with a
needle point, that is rank poison, and
in this bill is also carried the fever
germ. The mosquito bite is, there
fore, deadly poison.
It is impossible to prevent their ap
pearance in the summer season; but
to keep them from biting you, or to
cure the bite —that is, by the use of
"Skee-ter-go,” an a-styp-to-dyne pre
paration. “Skee-ter-go” drives off
mosquitoes, gnats and all other in
sects, and kills immediately the itch
ing pain produced by insect bites.
