Dr. CHASE, 224 North 10th St., Philadelphia, Pa.
in a tone of virtuous decision, tem
pered with a little tender regret:
“Yes, I know you loved me, Stanley;
but you must try to forget this now,
as I shall try to forget it.”
“So he was her lover. He must
care for her still, or she would not
have said that to him. It was she
whom he came here today to see,”
thought Sylvia; and a mirt gathered
in her eyes, blurring the colors of the
cream and pink roses she was arrang
ing on the table.
On the very first day of her entrance
into this peaceful Eden the beautiful
serpent had begun to work discord.
King had scarcely heard what Ana
bel said. He had not seen Sylvia. He
was standing at the window looking
out with an air of abstraction.
In a little while Charley came in.
“I think you already know my wife,”
he said to his guest.
“Yes; I knew her as Miss Boylan.
I was not aware of her marriage to
you until she informed me just now.
I heartily wish your married life may
be happy, Mr. Glenn,’ Stanley said, ex
tending his hand.
“He does not congratulate him on
his marriage,” thought Anabel, with
bitterness.
She made an effort to talk with her
usual gayety, but she was relieved and
glad when Rachel came to the door
and announced with an old-fashioned
courtesy .that “supper” was ready
Charley led the way to the dining
room. It was an attractive, home-like
picture, lighted with wax candles in
old-sash oned silver candle-sticks, a
tig china bow r l filled with roses occu
pying the center of the snowy-covered
table, and Sylvia in her white frock
seated behind the sprigged china tea
cups and quaint silver urn, with the
reverend white-haired old doctor at
her right hand.
Sylvia had offered the presiding
place at the table to Charley’s wife,
but Anabel gracefully declined.
“Not yet,” she said. “I shall beg you
to give me some private lessons first.”
She was charming during the meal.
Her bright talk interested Doctor
Glenn, and her thoughtful attention to
him won his heart.
“My son has gained a prize; I thank
God that he has chosen so wisely,”
thought the good minister.
