Under the darkened sky His dying

Well might they follow Him and

eighths without peeling, and remove
the core. Cut very thin slices of bacon,
and fry until crisp. Remove to a plat
ter, put the apples into the pan, and
fry until done. Put the bacon around
the edges of the platter, with the ap
ples heaped up in the center. Sprinkle

CLAYTON COUNTY AND THE
EARLY HOME OF BLECKLEY.
(Continued from Page 6.)
length, crowns a tall hill of emerald
green, separated by a willowed stream
from a mountain in the rear, and an
orchard on the slope leading to the
street, going town-ward. The breezes
that blow and sweep the wide piazzas,
with the views of the mountains in the
nearness and distance, simply carry
one away with exuberance of feeling.
Your appetite will grow with the ex
ercise and weight increase in ratio,
while the heart that reaches not
higher “from nature up to nature’s
God” is dull indeed. The “law of the
Lord converting the soul” mingles in
sweet accord with the “testimony” of
the “everlasting hills;” and heart and
body are rested, and made right for
labors yet to be.
Another home nest, on Bleckley St
leading to the mountains, directly fac
ing Screamer, and catching its most
exhilating breezes, is that refuge for
the weary at Mrs. S. D. Lee’s. The
scene presented here of its towering
grandeur, whether in softest green, or
in loveliness of embracing mists, is
rest and uplift. Here, near the site
of old Bleckley home, and “in the shade
of the old apple tree” of a hundred
years, that still gives by its reddened
fruit, happiness and health to her vis
itors, is this new home of the hospita
ble host and hostess who have success
fully undertaken improved garden-cul
ture, and poultry industry. Memories
old and new will linger of this sum
mer of 1910, and of their unfailing
kindness. ELLA C. BACON.
A PENSION FRAUD NIPPED IN THE
BUD.
William Bayard Hale in The World’s
Work for December.
A man named William Newby, of
White county, Illinois, was killed at
Shiloh, April 6, 1862, and was buried
on the battlefield by his comrades. So
the records of the War Department
attest. His widow moved from Illi
nois to Texas, and his family had
grown up and scattered by the year
1891, when a stranger walked into the
streets of the Texas town and an
nounced himself as William Newby.
His story was that a wound on the
head had made him insane that he had
wandered, and had only lately regain
ed memory of his identity. The wid
of Newby was sent for, and after a
little talk declared that this was her
missing husband. Now Mrs. Newby
had for thirty years been pensioned
as a veteran’s widow. The restored
“Newby” immediately applied for a
pension. His stake was a large one,
his claim being $15,000.
It was so large, in fact, that the
Pension Bureau thought it wise to put
a special agent on the case. It was
discovered that the new “Newby’s”
eyes were of the wrong color, and that
he was twenty years younger than he
should have been. Further investiga
tion proved the imposter to be a char
acter known as “Rickety Dan” Benton,
who had lived in White county, Illinois,
as a boy, but had never been in the
army, although he had been in poor
houses and j. ils. But the conspirators
and their friends were not going to
lose that $15,000 without a struggle.
A Newby League was formed, and ex
pert counsel engaged for the imposter.
At the trial before the United States
Court of Springfield, 111., one hundred
and forty witnesses, including the wid
ow and one son, testified in behalf of
the pretended Newby. The govern
ment produced sixty witness, including
“Newby’s” daughter and brother, who
repudiated him and told of marks not
shown on the defendant’s body.
The man was convicted. His claim
would probably have been allowed
without thought of investigation by
previous administrations of the Pen
sion Office.
