Cranberry Jelly —Cut two large tart
apples in small pieces and mix with
one quart of cranberries. Pour on
water, just enough to show through
the fruit, but not enough to cover.
Cook until tender and strain through
a colander. Measure the juice and
allow as many cupfuls of sugar as you
have juice. Cook fifteen or twenty
minutes. This will make firm jelly
without the sharp taste that so many
object to in cranberries.
Griddle Cakes.
Scald a pint and a half of sweet
milk and stand aside to cool; add a
pint and a half of Graham flour, and
beat until smooth. Melt two ounces
of butter and stir in with half a cup of
yeast and a teaspoonful of salt; stand
In a warm place over night. In the
morning beat three eggs, add to the
batter, let stand fifteen minutes and
bake on a hot, well-greased griddle.

MOURNING COLORS.
Intending to symbolize the gloom of
night, “when all men sleep,” black is
the color of mourning all over Europe.
In Persia pale brown materials are
•worn for mourning, the color of with
ered leaves. Both sorrow and hope
are expressed to the south sea island*
er in black and white stripes, while In
Ethiopia the mourning color is gray
ish brown, which represents ‘“the
earth to which all men return.” Pur
ple and violet have been the mourning
colors for cardinals and kings of
France, and white is ■worn to express
grief in China. In Syria and Armenia
sky blue is worn at the death of a rel
ative and is intended to express the
belief that the deceased has gone to
heaven. In Egypt, the Burma yellow
is worn to symbolize the sere and
yellow leaf. —London Answers.
