VOICES OF YOUTH
MNMUOYM BY KM. G. B. LINMVY.
Cupid, little did you know
What a love-match you were making,
When you whispered years ago
Words that set my heart a-quaking;
When your lips so rosy red
Took the question out of mine,
And you flew to her and said:
“Will you be my valentine?”
How I trembled at the test,
Which till then had been untried;
Little rogue, you never guessed
What that questioning implied.
Yet on wings of love you went
With that precious, weighty line;
What a world to me it meant:
“Will you be my valentine?”
I have wondered, did she press
On your lips her kisses warm;
Did she lavish fond caress
On your dainty, dimpled form?
Saucy boy! a kiss, or more,
Were a tribute far too fine
For the message that you bore:
“Will you be my valentine?”

CHAT.
Fl EBRU ARY with its several festive
birthday celebrations, is espe
cially blessed as a bearer of happiness
to boys and girls.
Already the shop windows and cen
ter counters of the stores are filled
with myriads of daintily trimmed,
many-hued Valentines of every con
ceivable shape and many of them are
wonderful works of art and beauty,
each bearing some tender message of
love. A tour of the different stores
yesterday and perhaps this lovely
spring weather, has been filling my
mind all day with girlhood memories
that have been tucked away under
the struggle and strife of the years
so long they seem like sweet dreams
of pleasure from which I awoke to find
life was duty, real and earnest, with
little time for dreaming. So glad am
I, therefore, to put joy into the life of
young people before the weightier
thoughts and obligations crowd them
selves upon them, that I only wish it
were possible to gather all of you
about me in one “great, big” Valentine
party, making you have, “oh, such a
good time.” And one of the enter
taining features of the evening would
be the evolution of the Valentine from
the white heart-shaped ones, their
edges cut into fine fringe and bearing
the old love rhymes of our grand
mothers’ times, on down through the
many different stages until the pres
ent beautiful creations were reached.
Since that is impossible, I want to tell
you about one of Cupid’s victories that
had its beginning long before “a store
bought” Valentine was so much as
dreamed of.
In a little log school house the
cracks of which were daubed with
mud, its only seats being split open
logs, with pegs driven in for legs, was
a small band of children studying in
the primitive style from the old blue
back spelling book. There were whis
perings here and there and sly pass
ing of tiny packages between the usu
ally studious boys and girls, for It
was Valentine day and Cupid was stir
ring innocent, happy hearts. One of
the dainty missives he used that day
had cost the sender, a beautiful brown
eyed boy of eleven years, much careful
work. The older sister had been per-

LOVE 'S MESSAGE
Sam T. C lob er.

Had she coldly turned her head,
Tossed aside her golden tresses,
Gathered up her gown and fled,
Chary been of her caresses,
Then I would not wonder much,
For my lady could divine
All the daring in that touch:
“Will you be my valentine?”
Cupid, let the matter go.
What she did was right and proper,
And, at that time, as you know,
I made no pretense to stop her.
All she said I never learned —
All I heeded was that line
Os the answer you returned:
“I will be your valentine.”
Saucy, dimpled, rosy boy,
You are just as dear today,
Bearing messages of joy
To a sweetheart far away,
As when years ago you flew
With that daring wish of mine;
Cupid, we have both been true;
Love has been our valentine!
suaded to cut the pure white heart
from writing paper, fringing it neatly
by cutting the edges; all around the
inner edge tiny slits were cut through
which a narrow piece of ribbon was
run and tied into as near a lover’s
knot as possible; then George, for
that was his name, slowly but neatly
and with all anxiety wrote:
“The rose is red,
The violet’s blue,
Sugar is sweet,
And so are yot.”
Blue-eyed Lucy, with golden curls,
read, blushed, hid the love missive
away with her keepsakes and watched
with all the pure love of a child the
strides which George made in his stud
ies, counting daily the rounds he made
in the spelling class and smiling her ap
proval when he worked his example
quickest or read his lesson best. Those
were happy days when the reddest ap
ples, and the largest violets found
their way to Lucy. At sixteen too
manly to send the fancy heart, a
small box of beautiful, double purple
hyacinths was secured and enclosed in
it in a steadier hand than the first was
the poem revised:
"Not as red, the rose, as your lips,
Nor the violet as blue as your eyes;
And sugar is not near so sweet
As a kiss from your lips in surprise.”
They were married early in those
days and life’s struggles began not in
steam-heated houses but in tiny two
room huts. As compared with the
beautiful homes that dot our farm
lands today they were the very pic
tures of poverty; yet some of the best,
noblest men we have ever known be
gan their battles in homes of this kind,
as did George and Lucy. The hours
were filled with too much struggle to
think of Cupid’s missives when Valen
tine day came round. But after the

Trial Package to Prove It Sent Free.
Any man or woman gets awfully
tired going around with a pimply face
day after day. And other people get
awfully tired, too, seeing them go
around with faces full of disgusting
pimples.
If you are one of the unfortunates
who can’t get away from your pim
ples, and you have tried almost every
thing under heaven to get rid of them,
take a few of Stuart’s Calcium Wafers
every day. Do that steadily for a few
days, and in less than a week look at
yourself in the mirror.
You will then say that Stuart’s Cal
cium Wafers are a wonder in getting
rid of the eruptions.
These wonderful little workers con
tain the most effective blood purifier
ever discovered, calcium sulphide.
No matter what your trouble is,
whether pimples, blotches, blackheads,
rash, tetter, eczema or scabby crusts,
you can solemly depend upon Stuart’s
Calcium Wafers as never-failing.
Stuart’s Calcium Wafers have cured
boils in three days and the worst cases
of skin diseases in a week. Every par
ticle of impurity is driven out of your
system completely, never to return,
and it is done without deranging your
system in the slightest.
Most treatments for the blood and
for skin eruptions are miserably slow
in their results, and besides, many of
them are poisonous. Stuart’s Calcium
Wafers contain no poison or drug of
any kind; they are absolutely harm
less, and yet do work which can not
fail to surprise you.
Don’t go around with a humiliating,
disgusting mass of pimples and black
heads on your face. A face covered
over with these disgusting things
makes people turn away from you, and
breeds failure in your life work. Stop
it. Read what an lowa man said when
he woke up one morning and fount'
he had a new face:
“By George, I never saw anything
like it. There I’ve been for three
years trying to get rid of pimples and
blackheads, and guess I used every
thing under the sun. I used your Cal
cium Wafers for just seven days. This
morning every blessed pimple is gone
and I can’t find a blackhead. I could
write you a volume of thanks. I am
so grateful to you.”
