blood and at home, and the joy that
came when the loyal hearts that had
suffered and yet not murmured came,
Lucy found beneath her plate on Feb
ruary fourteenth a tender, sweet re
minder that her school-boy sweetheart
and her soldier-boy husband had not
forgotten. It read:
Still are the roses red,
Still are violets blue,
And sugar still is sweet,
But you, dear wife, are you.”
Then when the children God had given
them had grown up and slipped out
into homes of their own, and again
they stood, the two in their little
nome, the weight of hard-fought years
hanging heavy upon their tired shoul
ders, softened and tender was the love
tiiat wrote:
“Roses will fade, and the violets, too,
And so does sugar, and so may you;
But my love glows on, as the flowers
depart,
And the years grow fewer for us,
sweetheart.”
Before another Valentine day had
dawned, Lucy had weakened, and tired
of the earthly struggle, the beautiful
blue eyes had faded, lost their light
entirely, and she had gone to gather
her sweetness from the Giver of all
that is pure and good. On the cold
marble slab he had them carve:
