has regularly maintained his presence
at public worship. I can sympa
thize myself this morning with
the feeling of Daniel when he said,
“I was glad when they said unto me,
let us go into the house of the Lord.”
The heart that is in full sympathy
with Christ, that is enjoying His re
ligion, will long for the house of God.
You may make all the excuses you
like, but don’t you know that God
knows there are places you go to, and
with the same effort you could come
to church? '
I remember, some years ago, just
after I began to preach, I was visiting
in a little town in western North Car
olina —Mt. Airy —and there was in
that town a returned missionary from
China, an old friend of mine, a college
chum. His wife and four children had
been for months struggling with
typhoid fever. On a certain day I was
to preach in a little village church.
The day before that his wife and one
child died. But when I got up in the
pulpit to preach, out in front of me I
saw this man. I walked down, took
him by the hand, put my arm around
him, and said, “Why are you here?
You did not have to come here to as
sure me of your love.” He said: “A as
much as I love you, I was not thinking
You hiay make al Ithe excuses you
of you. This was the first place I
thought of when my wife and child
died, and I came before anybody else
came. I wanted to get down here
where my wife was saved and where
my child was saved, and where they
worshiped God.” Have you any love
like that for the church? Do you feel
indifferent about it? Wouldn’t you go
to most any place before you would
go to church?
POULTICING SORES.
God calls every child of His day by
day for the purpose of making a
record of His will upon his life. Do
you turn your heart to God’s call, that
He may make an impression? Here
is a man who has gotten a bit sensi
tive. Somebody has hurt his feelings.
They have trampled on his toes, and
toes are not made to be trampled on.
And God calls. God can not touch a
heart that holds ill feeling against
other people, and yet you know there
are people that say, “Well, just so long
as so and so is there, you can count
me out.” That is literally true; you
will be counted out, and God will do
the counting. It does not make a
whit of difference whether you have
been wrongly treated or not, just as
long as there is that kind of spirit in
your heart you may as well close your
lips and heart and stop trying to pray.
“If thou bringest thy gift to the altar,
and there rememberest that thy
brother hath ought against thee, leave
thy gift at the altar, go and become
reconciled to thy brother, and then
come and offer thy gift.” It is a ques
tion as to whether a man had rather
enjoy a delightful intimate fellowship
with his Lord, or everlastingly spend
his time poulticing old sores. It is
just a question as to which of these
two things suit you most. Here is a
man who starts out drinking. It is his
first drink. God comes to him imme
diately. He does not need to have
him stop to tell him what God wants
to record. God says, “I am ready to
make a record; get the cylinder ready.”
You know what it will be before He
does it —“Stop right now and don’t
take another.” What about the record?
It is as blank as can be, because you
have not dared to listen. You know
what God would say, and you allow
your evil appetite to triumph.
Here is a man seeking worldly

Submerged Christianity
(Continued from Page Tino)
pleasure. God speaks to him and
says, “I want to make a record; get
the cylinder ready.” You know what
God is going to put on that cylinder.
If you put the cylinder of your heart’s
affections to God as a loyal servant
of His and He records His will, He is
going to deprive you of attending
those dirty old shows and things of
that character, that pull down charac
ter. You know it. You do not dare
to turn the record, and yet you won
der why it is that you get so cold and
indifferent and can not enjoy your re
ligion.
God speaks to some and says, “Get
your cylinder ready. I want to tell
you about your duty to the support of
your church. I look over the church
rolls, and you do not have a thing to
your credit. I waait to talk with you
about that.” And you say, “I am not
ready to turn that cylinder yet.” Be
cause you know what God will put on
it. You know as well as you know
your name that God is going to urge
on you your obligations. The fault is
not with God, nor is it with your fel
low-men; never mind how they have
treated you, the fault is with you. The
whole question is, “Had I rather have
a bright, happy, joyous Christian ex
perience that towers above the wreck
age of these things, or had I rather
drift along until, at last, God will tire
of that submerged life and send from
His presence a wind of trial that will
trouble the waters and roll the waves
so that you may be brought back to a
reliance upon Him.
I remember, sometime ago, I
dropped in to see a man dying of
pneumonia, and he said to me, “I wish
I could live just a little longer. I have
made so many resolutions that I would
do better, and I have broken every
one of them. I would love to live just
a little longer to prove to God before
1 die that I can keep a resolution.” I
said, “Do you think you would do it if
you were to live?” “Yes, for I am so
close to the edge that I have almost,
seen it. I realize now how worthless
all this life is. It does not count for a
cent when I come to die. I wish I
could live a little longer.” - I wished
that he might, too; but he did not.
His life went out, and no testimony
was left behind, and he is somewhere
in the eternal world, I do not know
where. There is no chance to undo
the past; it is fixed, forever and for
ever. It did not need to be so.

The climax of the evening came
when Thorne handed his daughter the
Altamont paper, saying, as he indi

“Can you bear a little more exciting
news, dear, —the best of news for you

She glanced down the column, her
breath coming quickly, her cheeks
flushing; then, with a cry of joy, she
threw her arms around her father’s
neck and buried her face on nis bosom.
He patted her bright head tenderly,
tears misting his brilliant eyes. Look-

Flatulency or Wind
On Stomach
As It Is Commonly Named, Means That
Decaying Food Is Making Gas.
This most serious condition is very
prevalent and results most distress
ingly and fatally oftentimes. The
stomach in cases of flatulency is un
able to digest the food properly. De
cay sets in, gases form, extend the
stomach, force their way downward
into the bow r els, and if not relieved, it
extends upward, pressing against the
lungs, liver and heart, causing short
ness of breath, belching, foul odors
and many times sudden death.
Foods which are filled with gases,
when taken into a deranged stomach,
cause flatulency rapidly, vegetables
being especially given to this quality.
Against such a condition the stomach
can do but little, because these foul
and poisonous gases affect its glands,
muscles and tissues to such a degree
as to incapacitate it almost at once.
These gases distend the stomach in
all directions, preventing the contract
ing muscles from doing their regular
duties, or if they do force the gas from
the stomach, it goes elsewhere in the
system with even more harassing re
sults, and then the decaying mass
still remains to generate more gases.
The most effective methods for al
laying flatulency is to remove the
cause of gas making. An emetic will
do this, but the stomach will have the
same trouble the moment new food
enters it.
Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets get at
gas food at once, digest it, prevent de
cay, quickly reduce food to nourish
ment, make good rich gastric fluid and
pass the digested food to the intes
tines, giving the stomach its rest and
the system its nourishment. Flatu
lency simply can not exist where these
little tablets are used. They build up
the stomach fluids so that it matters
not how many vegetables you eat or
food containing quantities of gas, the
stomach does its work well and
quickly.
Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets are sold
everywhere and used the whole world
over by sick stomachs and stomachs
that want to eat heartily and yet not
get sick.
Every druggist carries Stuart’s Dys
pepsia Tablets, price 50 cents per box.
The demand for these little digesters
is constantly increasing. Forty thou
sand physicians in America and Can
ada use them and prescribe them.
