as he stalks along in a most indifferent
fashion.
The biggest, fattest Arabs ride the
smallest donkeys; but foreigners are
not often seen on them here, as in
Cairo, perhaps because the donkeys in
Egypt are a much finer breed. The
donkeys in Biskra sell for five francs
each, that is SI.OO for the best; and
the little, moth-eaten fellows, that
bear the heaviest burdens, can easily
be had for sixty cents.
We lost our hearts over a pretty,
little, gray fellow and wanted to pack
him up for use in the United States.
But he would not go into a shawl roll
nor a trunk, and so we reluctantly
bade him “Good-bye.”
My pen would run on for hours
about Biskra; but the city had to be
left at last, and now we are in Tunis,
waiting for the rain to finish, that we
may go out and see the place. From
here, we sail to Gibraltar and Spain.
