ELIJAH MEETS AHAB IN NABOTH’S
VINEYARD.
February 26, 1911.
Time —899 B. C.
PLACE—Jezreel.
I Kings 21:11 to 20.
GOLDEN TEXT:—“Take heed and
beware of covetousness.” —Luke 12:
15.
SUGGESTIVE THOUGHTS.
What should I do?
I. —Beware of Covetousness. Vs.
11-16, and Luke 12-15.
Covetousness led to the murder of
Naboth and his sons, and brought
ruin upon Ahab, his family and his
religion. Covetousness has led, and
still leads, men into all kinds of sin.
It causes men to do those things that
bring ruin upon themselves and their
families and send their souls to an
endless hell. It may have been al
right for Ahab, a rejecter of God, to
desire Naboth’s vineyard and seek in
a right and honorable way to obtain it.
It may have been alright for him to
offer to buy the vineyard, and give a
fair price for the same. But Naboth,
a believer in God, could not sell or
exchange the inheritance of his fath
ers, unless he was too poor to pos
sess it. (Num. 36:7; Lev. 25:23-25.)
Under the land laws of Israel, Ahab
could not purchase this land in fee.
Naboth or his heirs had the right of
redemption. If unable to redeem, the
land must be returned to him or his
heirs in the year of Jubilee. (Lev.
25-23-29.) Covetousness caused Ahab
to disregard the laws of Israel and the
rights of Naboth. Covetousness made
him a murderer. As the cedars of
Lebanon crowd out all other vege
table life, so covetousness crowds out
of the heart kindness, thoughtfulness
and all other good traits of character.
11. —Count Your Blessings.
Had Ahab stopped to count his
blessings and to consider what he
possessed, he would not have been
troubled over the vineyard of Naboth;
when troubles come upon us if we
will stop and count our blessings our
hearts will leap with joy instead of
being filled with sadness.
111. Don’t Sulk.
Don’t sulk when things don’t go
your way. A great man or a good
man never sulks. The man that has
faith in God never sulks. Those that
sulk Satan will lead into all kinds of
sin.
IV. —Be Sure Your Sins Will Find
You Out. Vs. 17-29.
When Ahab went to take posses
sion of Naboth’s vineyard, Elijah
met him with God’s message, charging
him with selling himself to do evil in
the sight of the Lord. Ahab paid a
great price for this vineyard. He
gave himself, his hope, his peace, and
his life. Remember, sin demands one
price of all, and that is the man him
self. When God said, “Be sure your
sin will find you out,” He did not
mean that your sin will be found out.
Your sin may never be found out.
Many sins of many people have never
been found out. The Bible says, “Be
sure your sin will find you out,’ and
it never fails to do so. No matter
how secret your sin, it causes you to
suffer in character, though your repu
tation may escape.
V. Don’t Accept What is Obotained
by Wrong Means.. Vs. 14-16.
Jezebel by foul means obtained this
vineyard and Ahab knew this, there
fore he could not accept it "without
being equally guilty with her. Those
who take the profits and dividends
from stocks in corporations that use
wrong and oppressive means to make
money, are guilty of the wrongs theni-

selves. They are as guilty of violat
ing God’s law as the corporation that
does those things. Those who vote to
license men to sell liquor to get the
license money for taxes are guilty of
all the evil and crime that result
from the sale of liquor. As Jezebel
and others were only the agents of
Ahab in the murder of Naboth, so the
saloon-keepers are only the agents of
those "who vote to license the sale of
liquors. As sure as God charged
Ahab with the murder of Naboth, so
He will charge each voter for liquor

license with the murder of all that
are being destroyed by the liquor
traffic. Jezebel gave Ahab the vine
yards that belonged to another. (1
Kings 21:7.) She had to use foul
means to get it so she could give it
to Ahab.
There is much of that sort of gen
erosity in the world today. Men make
large gifts to colleges, churches, hos
pitals and other philanthropic enter
prises out of money that really be
longs to others and which they have
obtained by the use of means that are
condemned by God’s Word.
Vl.—Remember That God Will Give
You Back Your Lost Power. Vs. 17-20.
Elijah got right with God and God
gave him back his power. He called
down fire from heaven and now he
gives again God’s message—a mes
sage that requires courage to deliver.
He is no longer the fleeing coward,
but the dauntless hero of the past.
He goes and delivers God’s message
as he was commanded. If you go to
God and repent of your sin and ask
Him for the power.
