THE FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE OF
THE SOUTH.
In one of her Household Chats Mrs.
Bryan alluded to the Florence Nightin
gale of the Southern Confederacy. To
whom she referred I don’t know, for
there were so many noble women dur
ing the severe war between the States
that many might be entitled to be
called the Florence Nightingale—in
fact, I think all our women were
stirred with enthusiasm and sympathy
during that period. I was but a small
child then, but their devotion and
solicitude for the soldiers was deeply
impressed on my mind. My grand
mother and aunts knitted socks to
send to the soldiers. I have been with
my mother and neighbors to the rail
road station to meet trains of cars of
soldiers, carrying them cooked provis
ions. I well remember the eagerness
and appreciation of the soldiers in re
ceiving these good things, especially
the sweet things. I spent a day at a
hospital once with my aunts. The
good ladies of the town went to this
hospital every day to assist the ma
tron in caring for the sick and
wounded soldiers. Well do I remem
ber the single beds, or “bunks”, ar
ranged so closely that there was
barely walking room between them.
Some of the poor soldiers were conva
lescing, others were dying. Some had
arms cut off and others legs, and oth
ers with severe wounds about on the
body. They were so grateful for the
kindness shown them, and, oh! how
they relished the soups, custards and
other dainties carried to them by the
kind ladies!
The young ladies of this town were
very attentive to the soldiers, and
after they were well enough to leave
the sick room they were invited to
the homes of the people to take meals
and to entertainments. Here they en
joyed music, and especially the war
songs. Some of these old songs were
impressed on my child mind, and ever
will remain, for it seems the old songs
of my childhood are remembered bet
ter than those learned since.

HOME REMEDY
Mrs. Temple Clark suffered for
years, before she found relief in that
popular, successful woman’s medicine,
Wine of Cardui. *
Mrs. Clark, who lives in Timberville,
Miss., writes: “Cardui has been worth
more to me than a carload of silver.
If it had not been for Cardui, I would
have been dead. I love a dollar, but I
have never seen one that I do not
think as much of, as I do of a bottle
of Cardui. I now keep It in my house,
as regularly as I do coal oil or coffee,
and have done so for years.
“Some years ago I jumped off »
horse and had a mishap, and for about
four years after that I suffered in
tense agony. At last I was induced tc
try Cardui, which cured me, and now
I am well and happy.
“I am sure Cardui will cure othei
sick ladies as it has me.”
Cardui is for women. It acts spe
ciflcally and in a natural manner or
tie womanly system and has been
