VUB Dr. ftOBEEH’M Bex X, 4TIABTA, GA,
braska, and both of these are anti-pro
hibition. The sentiment of the people
of Kansas towards the people of the
South has changed wonderfully in the
last few years. There was a time
when the people of Kansas were very
bitter towards the South because of its
treatment of the negro and yet a short
time ago one of the leading Republican
papers of the state, edited and owned
by an ex-union soldier, said,* that if
the of Kansas could vote on the
proposition Kansas would disfranchise
the negro. There was a time when a
Southern lecturer or platform speaker
would have a very slim audience in
Kansas, but now the people gladly wel
come the Southern speakers. I will
now relate a true story to show what
the people of Kansas will do.
After the battle at Chancellorsville
a company of Southern boys were rid
ing over the battlefields when they
came across a boy who wore the blue,
and who, as they thought, was wound
ed unto death. One of the boys, who
wore the gray, got off his horse and
made the wounded boy as comfortable
as possible, and left him, as he sup
posed, to die. But the wounded boy
did not die and when the war was over
cast his lot with the people of Kansas.
A few years ago he was appointed to
the United States Senate and todav is
the judge of one of the largest judi
cial districts in the state. In process
of time the boy who wore the gray
wended his way westward and settled
in Kansas and a few years ago the
people of Kansas elected the late Col.
W. A. Harris, the ex-confederate, to the
United States Senate.
On memorial day, when the people
of Kansas go out to decorate the
graves of those who wore the blue they
do not forget those who wore the gray
“No more shall the war clouds sever,
Nor the winding rivers be red
They banish our hate forever,
When they garland the graves of
our dead.”

WHEN ONE COMES TO THE PART
ING OF THE WAYS.
For the few months that I have been
a subscribe!’ to The Golden Age, the
columns of the Household page have
been a source of profound interest to
me.
The helpful suggestions and beauti
ful thoughts given by our dear mater
and the Household sisters make it
worth the while.
I will agree with the mater in her
response to Fineta’s inquiry concern
ing the peacemaker.
I think Christ intended the bless
ing for those who seek to assuage op
position and strife between parties
and nations, and bring about a general
and international peace.
But I also believe that God is not
unmindful of those who attempt,—if
through a pure motive, to bring about
a reconciliation between individuals.
For to view it from one standpoint,
’tis the little, nameless, unremembered
acts of kindness and of love that
eradicate all envy, selfishness and
hatred and constitutes the “universal
brotherhood.”
I would be very glad to hear from
some of the Household in reply to
“Earnest Seeker’s” letter of some
time ago. It would be a source of
pleasure to me to give her some in
formation concerning the perplexing
questions contained in the Book of
books.
But, alas! I, too, am one of the
“great mass of professed Christians
who know so little about the Bible.”
But I am ambitious to know the true
way of living as given in the Bible,
and when I was converted I began
searching the Scriptures prayerfully
and with a desire to find the “straight
and narrow path” and, according to
The Golden Age for April 6, 1911.
the beautiful promise, “Seek and ye
shall find,” my efforts were not in
vain.
I think the fifth, sixth and seventh
Chapters of St. Matthew—Christ’s Ser
mon on the Mount —to be the most
concrete and comprehensible code of
Christian living, as given in the en
tire New Testament. I have learned
it verbatim, so that I would only have
to draw from the pages of memory for
information when I come to the part
ing of the ways and find it necessary
to determine between the principles of
right and wrong. I am fully aware
that it is infinitely beyond my reach to
ever acquire a thorough knowledge of
the deeper things of the Bible.
But I delight to read from the pen
of those who think profoundly and
earnestly concerning these things.
Seemingly there are only a few who
are endowed with a knowledge suffi
cient to penetrate these mysteries.
But I believe this by no means re
leases those who are less fortunate
in that way from the should be indis
pensable duty of Bible study.
If this unintentionally long letter
finds a welcome in the Household
page, I will come again some of these
beautiful spring days.
With love for the mater and all the
Household, I am
Sincerely,
LILLY.

THE KEY TO A HUMAN HEART.
(For Both Men and Women.)
“If we wish to win a heart,
Let us then first find
What thing forms the largest part,
And that key turn.
If this we do with good intent,
And patient in our love,
Wise we must be as a serpent
And harmless as a dove.”
Now, if women and men would do
just what the above lines advocate
try to learn all we can of a man or
woman before taking either for better
or worse—so many mistakes would
not be made afterward. If Adam and
Eve had so many tribulations, why
should their children go free? Are
we not all of the same flesh and
blood. If we measure a man, why not
a woman, in what goes to make a
happy life? Oui’ homes are what we
ourselves make and build; and love
should be the chief cornerstone. Pa
tience comes next. The Bible says
that patience is the greatest of all
gifts, for it crowns love with its many
blessings. The happiest people are
those who have learned this beautiful
lesson. And no home can be a happy
one unless the ones who live there
have learned that it takes infinite pa
tience to help us bear all things, en
dure all things. And then, the man
and woman should fit themselves for
this place. It is just as much an edu
cation to learn how to make a happy
home as to study how to fill the high
est place the world can offer. We
should first learn what it takes to do
this, and neglect not even the smallest
item —yes, ’tis the small things in life
that count. And then, a man should
be brave enough and strong enough to
carry the heaviest part. And the wo
man should have the most patience.
There is nothing more beautiful than
a life shared by two, making all things
equal to carry. God bless them, I say.
“Home is not merely four bare walls,
Though hung with pictures carved
and gilded;
Home is where affection calls —
Where the arms of love are
wielded.”
