THE RED BIRD.
See this pretty red bird, children,
that Joe has caught in his trap. Thank
you ever so much, Joe. Now let us
talk about this pretty bird.
The red bird or cardinal is a na
tive of the United States. The male
and female are of the same size and
shape, but the former is a deep bright
red while his mate is a brownish red.
Their bills are short and come sud
denly to a point and a child should
beware how he handles one if these
pretty birds for when once the fin
ger is in its mouth it holds with a
vice-like grip. The child may scream
and let loose the bird, but he holds
on and sometimes draws blood from
the finger.
These are quite pretty when loose un
der the vines and rose bushes. A city
lady, living for a short while in the
country, had her husband to make
traps and cages and she kept a num
ber of red birds caged for some time.
It was indeed a pretty sight to see
her birds, but to me they were much
prettier flitting about under the rose
vines and grape arbors.
They eat seeds, grass, berries and
insects. Their song is a cheerful little
air, not so elaborate as the mocking
bird, but. something more than the
wren.
We will not hate this pretty bird
for his bite, because he does this in
self-defense and he has a right to his
freedom. He was made to destroy
troublesome insects and to make earth
glad and beautiful, so now Joe, as we
have looked at him and talked about
him, let’s take him to the window and
give him his freedom.
There is the cat out under the trees.
We will not let it fly in her directio?
Some time ago we found a poor lead
red bird that a cat had partly de
voured.

A little whipporwill sings often
times in the trees in front of the

you could hear it.
We are having the county drained

They will mean a great deal to this
