A HOL Y LIFE
<
| ’(Continued from Page Two.)
it, he realizes the fruit of it, anu the
blessing is always in proportion to the
extent of the work that is done upon
that blessed transaction through
which a man passed when, for the first
time, he looked up and saw his cruci
fied Lord.
What is holiness as we find it in
the Scriptures? Holiness in the
Scriptures is an attitude of the will in
which Christ is made supreme. Par
don me if I say to you that I have
worked upon every definition that I
have ever found in the Scriptures and
I have. worked upon ev.ery definition
given by other men with reference to
arriving at what is the proper and
the most concrete language in which
to set the whole doctrine of Christian
holiness, and this is the outcome of
what I have done on that line. The
attitude of the will in which Christ
Jesus is made supreme.
Now, this is not any new teaching.
If we go back in the old Mosaic econ
omy we find holiness taught even
there and taught with as much empha
sis as in the New Testament. The
nineteenth chapter of the book of Le
viticus is a chapter setting forth in
the most minute way holiness unto
the Lord. It begins with the declara
tion, “Ye shall be holy, for I, the
Lord your God, am holy,” and how
much this corresponds with our New
Testament teaching. We turn to the
Epistle to the Hebrews, and the four
teenth verse of the twelfth chapter,
“Follow peace with all men and holi
ness, without which no man shall see
the Lord.” This Old Testament form
of holiness is to some extent translat
ed in a different way from that which
we find it translated in the New Tes
tament. Or perhaps I should say it
is approached in a different way from
that in the New Testament. As we
read that nineteenth chapter of Le
viticus is a chapter setting forth in
life of holiness; first, honesty; sec
ond, truthfulness; third, respect for
parents; fourth, fair dealing with
servants; fifth, kindness to strangers,
etc.
That was the requirement of Israel;
that requirement stood for thousands
of years, although it was never ex
perienced. Never one man in all the
history of Israel measured up to that
requirement; not one. He might ap
proximate it, but he never fully lived
up to it, until Jesus came, and when
he came he was the fulfillment of that
requirement. He was that picture,
and if you would see that picture
given life and breathing, if you would
hear it speak, that picture drawn in
the 19th chapter of Leviticus, come
with me into the gospel and have an
introduction to the one man that liv
ed it —Jesus of Nazareth.
But someone says, “That presents
a greater muddle for my life than
before you began, for here I turn over
into the Epistle to the Hebrews and
find that it is emphatically declared
that without holiness no man can see
God, and if no man in the Old Tes
tament economy ever measured up,
then how am I to measure up; it is
a mere ideal life; an ideal submitted
without any expectation of realiza
tion.” But here is where a bit of
theological work is necessary to be
done, and I call your close attention
to what I am trying to say at this
point. The Old Testament law was
done away when Christ came. Have
you read Romans? If you have, you
do not need that I should say to you
that the law was done away when
Christ came, not that there is any
thing in the law after Jesus comes
The Golden Age for May 11,1911.
that one is at liberty to do that he
was not at liberty to do before Christ
came. It is not done away in that
sense. There is no lowering of the
ethical standard in the Christian.
Christ does not lower the standard
of life, or, to put it in another way,
a Christian is not privileged to live
upon any lower plane and to do any
baser thing than the Jew. The law
was done away because Jesus Himself
fulfilled it, and when we take Jesus
as Lord and Saviour, we take Him for
all that He stands for. If He fulfilled
the law, the law then is received in
proportion as we receive Christ. So
that instead of going back into the
Old Testament teaching for instruc
tion, for precepts, for life, we come
to Jesus, the author and the finisher
of our faith.
My brethren, I do. not think I have
ever really and truly appreciated the
Apostle’s teaching in the first Corinth
ian letter, chapter 1, verse 30, like I
do this morning. Here it is: “Christ
was made wisdom, sanctification and
redemption.” That word sanctifica
tion is identical with the word holi
ness; it is the same word in the
Greek. What is holiness in the light
of that teaching? Holiness is the na
ture of God.
Now, the question facing every one
is, first of all, do we want that life? I
do not say that life as is set forth
over here in the teaching of Moses.
I do not say that life of honesty. I
do not say that life of respectability,
of kindness for strangers and to the
sick; I do not say that life of kind
ness to the poor; the life of charity,
of love to neighbors; all this we
need, and all this we will get if we
get Christ.
What I mean to ask is this: Do we
want that life that is lived in and
through the sway of His will? That
is what I want. Do you want it? Do
you want the life on this earth among
your fellows that would be the exact
outcome of perfect obedience to every
movement of His divine will in your
life? It was this life that the Apostle
was expounding to the Corinthian
Church, and it was this life that he
was urging them to enter upon—
“perfecting holiness.” Do we want
that? He wants it for us just
as much as for the Corinthian
church; that we, in this twen
tieth century, as Christian men
and women, present in this building
today, should live a life of holiness.
Are we doing it? Are we willing to
do it? Do we want it? • Everything
depends upon the extent of our will
ingness and desire. There is ‘no
achievement, however great, that can
not be realized in Christian expe
rience if we will do His will.
Do you remember when Jesus came
upon that journey to the pool of Beth
saida, and saw the lame man, Jesus
said to him, “Wilt thou be made
whole?” and the man looked up and
said, “Yes, but I have nobody to put
me in,” as much as to say, “Yes; why
do you think I am here?” Jesus said,
“If thou wilt; be thou whole.” It is a
question of the will, and so the first
question for any Christian man who
desires to make progress in this ex-

perience of Christian holiness is, “Do
I want it?” Do I want that life in
which Jesus is made absolute King
and ruler of my life?
May I help you to come at it by a
bit of careful analysis? We will
start with business life. Do you want
it there? Don’t say yes unless you
mean it. In our business life, as busi

that the Lord Jesus shall analyze our
business life, and see what per cent,
is really honest and what is dishon

cuts and unwarranted methods that
