but that God knows, and Jesus
knows? Do we want it in business?
Do we want it in our social life?
Do we want that Jesus shall become
the master of that social life of ours
that we live day by day? Do we
want that He shall come in and reg
ulate what He would have done in
the realm of the social? I have come
to see some things in an entirely new
light. All the preaching in the world
in the way of denunciation against
so-called worldliness will never rec
tify the worldliness of the church. I
am not saying that it should not be
done; men and women should be
shown what these things lead to, but
I am here to say to you that if a child
of God is to' be rectified in himself in
this line, you have to get back of that
and underneath it; you have to be
able to show him wherein the philos
ophy of the Christian requirement is
to be found; but it is not a question
of giving up this or that or the other;
it is a question of taking on the Lord
ship of Jesus, that He may become
the referee, and that, as referee, He
shall have the right to lay His fingers
upon wrong in my life, and it is gone,
however much I may cling to it. That
is holiness.
Finally, do we want it in our sphere
of service? Do we? Do we want that
life Jesus called the life of holiness,
which is but a life of obedience to
the will of our Lord? Do we want
that life that actually refers to Him
for service that we are to render in
the Church of Christ and to the world.
Do we? It will regulate every whit
of the difficulties we are laboring
against. There isn’t a problem that
would not be solved by application of
that principle. If only that principle
could seize our minds today we would
never have to say, “Brethren, come
to prayer meeting;” it would not be
be necessary. He would do the say
ing, and you would do the coming.
Oh, you can fool your neighbors by
saying you were tired and a few other
things, but this would govern all that.
I am reminded of the most inspiring
picture I ever saw in an art gallery
somewhere in my travels in Europe,
I do not know just where; I remem
ber the picture with a great deal of
interest. It is a small picture, per
haps not more than two feet long, and
perhaps not more than a half foot
wide, but it is exquisitely painted, and
the lesson is teaches is far more sig-

I for which the stone from the ancient quarries was so justly tW
famous. In beauty Georgia Marble stands without an |H
equal. It matches up perfectly, and when lettered shows
a striking contrast that renders the inscription readable from V
a distance. The crystalline formation is so closely interlocked B

nificant. It is, first of all, a picture
of Jesus, with beautiful, trustful face,
with those deeply piercing and woo
ing eyes, and out in front is a picture
of a woman, a beautiful girl, simply
but beautifully attired, with a very in
teresting face and still more interest
ing and inquisitive look in her eyes;
and in her hand she holds a crown,
bedecked with many stars, and He is
looking at her and is not saying a
word, and she is looking at the
crown. She watches that crown;
girl-like, she wants it; and deep
down in her conscience there is
something that tells her that He
ought to have it, that it belongs to
Him, and she holds it between her
and Jesus. The picture is entitled
“The Inquisitive Crown —Where Shall
It Be Placed?” It has got to go on
somebody’s head —there on the head
of Jesus or on hers. With her hand
she can put that crown on the head
of Jesus, or on her own head. My
brethren and sisters, that picture is
no other picture than the picture you
present and I present this morning—
the crown of our life and its service,
the crown of our affections and its
love, the crown of our piety and its
consequences, the crown of our be
ing—what shall be done with it?
Shall we continue to map out our own
career and say where we will go and
when we will go and how long we will
stay and what we will do, or will we
hand it over to Jesus and let Him
wear it?
