could have secured from that duke
every dollar of his possession if he
Had only agreed to pronounce absolu
tion without requiring him to confess
his sin. But what was money to the
man who had a conscience, and a con
science that had been fired with the
rottenness among his people? Oh,
my brethren, then cometh Savonarola
to his baptism! What was his bap
tism? The baptism of suffering.
The baptism of Jesus was a bap
tism in identification with the suffer
ing and the ostracism, the contempt,
the threatened life that had befallen
John the Baptist. It Was Jesus walk
ing to John and saying, “Let me be
associated with you in your suffering.”
That is it. Yes and I believe when Sa
vonarola stood at the stake, and the
faggots were put around him, if we
could have the written account as to
day it is recorded in glory, we would
have another text that reads like
this: “Then cometh Jesus from
Heaven to be baptized of Savonarola
in his death,” a baptism of identifica
tion with suffering for righteousness’
sake.
Then we come forty years, and we
are in another time, when the Pope
has the world bound in sin and in
iquity, and -when, through threats by
the Spanish Armada, he had shaken
to the very foundation the whole of
the British empire. Martin Luther
steps upon the scene, and what is his
message? It is a message of flaming
fire, of criticism, of denunciation, a
message in which he has flung into
the face of Rome and the powers that
be a challenge to combat. The Pope
presented to him that fatal bull
which, when he read, he summoned
the citizenry to the public square; a
bon-fire was built, and when the fire
leaped and burned, he unrolled the
bull and flung it into the fire and
swore eternal vengeance against the
corruption of that machinery which
was at that moment baptizing the
world in sin, and as the bull burned,
if we could see the record written in
Heaven, it would read thus: “Then
cometh Jesus to Martin Luther to be
baptized of him in his sufferings and
in his loneliness.”
We come on down three centuries,
and "we are in our own beloved land;
a land dedicated to the free and the
brave, and we find that slavery has
seized us and we are worshipping at
the shrine of the god of slavery; and
movement after movement has arisen,
only to be crushed in their rising, for
no man in America at that time could
hope to hold a national office who
stood in favor of the abolition of the
slaves. But on the fires of liberty
and freedom burned, higher and high
er. Further and further their incense
went. After a while, in Illinois,
where the abolition movement w T as in
its very infancy, where almost uni
versally the whole of the people
stood against the abolition of the
slaves, personal interests being at
stake, what happened? In that State
of corruption appeared Abraham Lin
coln. An aspirant for the White
House, he flung into the teeth of the
men in favor of slavery his challenge
for the freedom of the slaves, and in
that terrible combat with Douglass he
laid his platform with planks of free
dom for all men. You know what
happened. On and on this Moses of
liberty went, conquering and to con
quer; and I believe that if we could
have the account as it today is writ
ten in Heaven, on the day when he
made his first public proclamation,
his platform, which was unpopular, we
v/ould have Jesus saying to us in an
other text, “Then cometh Jesus to
Lincoln to be baptized of him.”
Has this any special message to
you? It has to me, and it is this: Let
us sum it up. The man who expects
to be identified with Jesus has got to
be a man who stands four-square
against that which is wrong regard
less of who and where and when it
hits, and the man who does not do it
is a man who may succeed for a
time, but he will succeed independent
cf the identification and endorsement
of the only factor whose victories
ever endure.
Oh, brethren, have you stood your
self against wrong? Are you in a
fight against the evil? If you are, be
encouraged with the consciousness of
identification with Him. Oh. church
of God. have yen a man, pastor, as
your mouthpiece, who publicly sets
himself against the powers of evil?
Though he may not be a man whose
every word you can endorse, I pray
you, think not of the imperfections of
the man, but think of his stand. Are
you sure he stands? If you are, be
fore God you are fortunate people.
Oh, this morning, if I could have the
consciousness that in all matters I
myself was non-approachable only as
Gcd shall lead and move, to know that
under these circumstances I had
wrapped about me the never failing
arms would be enough to baptize me
in joy for the rest of my life. “Then
cometh Jesus to John, the despised
for righteousness’ sake, to be baptized
with him.”

Floyd turned up her aristocratic
nose as Lynne swept by her chair, and
Garnet bowed mockingly at her in
consequence, as he also left the room.
Miss Gordon had disappeared from
the sitting room, and Garnet was
walking up and down on the piazza,
popping the air aimlessly with his
riding whip, -when Lynne came down
the stair steps. Her plain black dress
was brightened by a scarlet jacket of
cunning cut, while a large hat, with a
graceful plume that wreathed almost
to her shoulder, completed the impro
vised outfit. Garnet’s eyes betrayed
a degree of admiration that sent the
blood in eloquent protest to the girl’s
brow as he joined her.
“Punctuality is one of the cardinal
virtues,” he commented lightly, “and
I am glad to find out that you possess
it in such an eminent degree.”
“No, I do' not possess it at all,”
Lynne replied, telling the literal art
less truth with mirthful indifference.
“I am nearly always behind time, a
half minute late if no later. Only, to
day, I could not dream over my toilet,
because you know you might have
grown impatient and left me. I con
fess to having frightened myself with
the possibility.”
“A very complimentary conclusion;
if you come to a few more of a similar
kind, I am afraid I shall stand but
small chance of retaining your favor.”
“Cela depends,” she answered in a
tone that was a cross between vexa
tion and amusement.

WALNUT CAKE.
Two eggs beaten well, one cup of
white sugar and two-thirds of a cup
of sweet cream, one heaping teaspoon
of baking powder sifted with one and
one-half cups of flour, a pinch of salt.
Bake in five layers. Filling—Two
thirds of a cup of walnut meats rolled,
half a cup of white sugar, two-thirds
of a cup of sour cream. Mix and
spread between the layers.
