that the world ever knew. What, I
say again, is the explanation of it? It
is not alone to be found in the occa
sion; it is not alone to be found in
the greatness of His theme; these He
had, but they were the common prop
erty of other men and other public
speakers that did not have His power
and His popularity.
But it is not alone to be found in
the wonderfulness of His personality.
This, of course, He had, as no other
man ever had it; but not in this line
is to be found His power and popu
larity, nor is it alone to be found in
the blending of all three of these
elements that go to make up a great
address, a great sermon, or a great
preacher.
No, my brethren, the one striking
feature in the popularity and power of
Jesus was in that inexplicably divine
element that entered into His person
ality on the day when He came from
the baptismal waters, and the Spirit
of God rested upon Him like a dove.
Then and there the natural orator was
transmuted into the supernatural man,
and it is in that that the great match
less power of Jesus is to be found.
The personaliy of Jesus can not be ex
plained by any of the processes of
human reasoning. From the stand
point of human reasoning, He, in His
personality, is as mystical as the
maze of the world’s first creation.
Before it we stand with our lips
sealed. It was the power of the
divine passion and divine love, which
divine passion and love is the direct
outcome of the enduement of the
Spirit of God that came upon Him
when He marched from the baptismal
waters in the Jordan. And oh! what a
power it was! Men in the crowd were
impressed with it by His very pres
ence. Long before He opened His
mouth to speak there was a baptism
of love that rested upon the people,
so that before He began to speak sin
was rebuked and sinners were wooed
by that personality. Jesus could not
move in the presence of the crowd
without every eye being fastened on
Him. There was nothing in His face
that was specially striking; certainly
not anything to account for that;
there was nothing in His walk, noth
ing in His physical form, nothing in
His eyes, nothing in His intonation of
voice, for he was a man, a natural
man, a man of flesh such as we are.
Oh, I abominate those pictures that
I see of Jesus in which He is made to
appear different from His fellows. He
was a man, my brethren; a man, with
all the limitations of a man; and yet,
when He, this man Jesus, moved in
the midst of the people, there was a
holy hush and an awe that were inde
scribable. Why was it? You say,
“Oh, He was God.” My brethren, do
not misunderstand me. I am not un
derestimating or in any sense doubt'
ing the fact that He was God. That is
quite another side of what I want to
say this morning. But it was not by
reason of the fact that He was God
that He was popular as a preacher. It
was not by reason of the fact that He
was God that He had power as a pub
lic speaker. It was because, as man,
Spirit equipped, Spirit endued, Spirit
baptized, that He had this mystical,
marvelous, inexplicable power among
His people.
And this is always manifest without
declaration. No minister need stand
up before his people and say, “I have
been Spirit baptized.” My brethren,
there is something in a preacher who
has had his Pentacostal baptism that
speaks without words, that speaks
without motion of lip or limb, that
speaks in his very personality in his
presence. Men can tell it, but they
can not always explain it. They do
not always know how to account for
it, but they feel that there is some
thing here that is different. That
something God uses for the purpose
of gripping and holding and teaching
the people.
You have perhaps heard that legend
that has come down through the ages:
It is said that Jesus was standing, one
day, in the market place, surrounded
by a great crowd of people, most of
them his enemies. On the outskirts
of the crowd they cursed and vilified
Him. Outside the crowd was a man
beating his dog. The dog was heard
howling above the noise of the crowd,
so that Jesus was forced to stop talk
ing until the dog ceased howling.
When the man ceased beating the dog,
the dog sprang upon his feet and ran
through the crowd until he came to
this mystical Personality, this wonder
ful Man, and, looking up into His
face, he doubled himself up at His
feet as much as to say, “I have now
reached the place of safety.” It may
only be a legend, but how much of
truth is there in it! We have often
times tested it in our lives; when the
world on the outside has been hard
to us; when the enemy has taken un
fair advantage of us, and when we
have felt ourselves in the grip of the
evil one; when things have gone hard
and harsh, we have run through the
crowd, never stopping until at last, at
the feet of Jesus, we have felt our
selves in the presence of an at
mosphere of a protector and com
forter.
The question that I ask as I close is,
Is there anything that can be of ser
vice to me as a preacher and to. you
as a Sunday-school teacher or Chris
tian worker —is there any lesson here
in this marvelous, mystical power of
Jesus for you and for me? If His
power as a preacher is due to the fact
that He is God, then there isn’t any
thing there for me save admiration
and worship. But it is more than
that. Jesus exhibits this power to
show what a saved man, called by
God and given a message to the
world —a man Spirit equipped, Spirit
baptized —can do. It is to show me
something of what I may have; it is
to show you what you may have
when we are Spirit endued and en
dowed. That is my message. How
the world needs it! How the pulpit
needs it! No amount of college train
ing, no amount of theological instruc
tion, no amount of Bible knowledge or
familiarity with classical literature, no
amount of study or art and acting —
none of these can take its place.
Oh! the greatness of the occasion
that we have today: a world rocking,
reeling, flowing toward hell! That is
a great enough occasion for any man;
it is great enough for angels; great
enough for a new incarnation of the
Son of God. The occasion is here.
What of the theme? What can I
say of the theme? It is salvation for
Terrible Picture of Suffering.
Clinton, Ky. —Mrs. M. C. McElroy, in
a letter from Clinton, writes: “For six
years I was a sufferer from female
troubles. I could not eat and could
not stand on my feet without suffering
great pain. Three of the best doctors
in the State said I was in a critical
condition and going down hill. I lost
hope. After using Cardui a week, I
began to improve. Now I feel better
than in six years.” Fifty years of suc
cess, in actual practice, is positive
proof that Cardui can always be relied
on for relieving female weakness and
disease. Why not test it for yourself?

You have heard that story told so
often of the days of D. L. Moody in
Chicago, when that great Sunday
school of his was at the very zenith of
its power and its glory. From all
parts of Chicago they were crowding
in through its doors. A policeman,
one day, walking his beat, far out on
the outskirts, came up with a lad,
barefooted and ragged, with unkept
hair and unwashed face and dirty
hands. He came through the streets,
and the policeman stopped him and
said, “Where are you going?” “I am
goin to Sunday-school.” “Where?”
He said, “Over to Mr. Moody’s, on the
other side of town.” “What are you
