Commandments vs. Traditions
(Continued from Page Two.)
There was something radically
wrong in their teaching.
Jesus had come to teach the world
one essential truth; and if you read
carefully and study the whole of the
teaching, and afterwards the teach
ing of the apostles, you will see that
the essential teaching of Jesus was
this. That true religion is a matter
of heart, and not of hand, or head.
Salvation begins within, and not
without. You remember how Jesus
taught Nichodemus. He said: “Ye
must be born again.” The Pharisees
and Scribes had never seen this. They
had come to Jesus to learn. Perhaps
U was to gratify a curiosity and go
back, to make an adverse report.
Jesus saw in their presence an op
portunity to teach them the one, es
sential lesson they needed to learn.
This brings us to the application.
Vs. 14-23.
“And when He had called all the
people unto Him He said unto them:
“Hearken unto Me every one of you,
and understand;
“There is nothing from without a
man, that entering into him can defile
him; but the things which come out
of him, those are they that defile the
man.
“If any man have ears to hear, let
him hear.
And when he was entered into the
house from the people, His disciples
asked Him concerning the parable.
“And He saith unto them, Are ye
so without understanding also? Do
ye not perceive, that whatsoever
thing from without entereth into the
man, it can not defile him.
“Because it entered not into his
heart, but into his belly and goeth out
into the draught, purging all meats?
“And he said, That which cometh
out of the man, that defileth the man.
“For from within, out of the heart
of men, proceed evil thoughts, adul
teries, fornications, murders, thefts,
covetousness, wickedness, deceit, las
civiousness, and evil eye, blasphemy,
pride, foolishness;
“All these evil things come from
within and defile the man.”
When we study this section we see
this truth standing out in great
boldness: The inside man is the man
of primary importance in all rela
tions of life. He is the one man that
we most need to watch.
First, we need to stress this lesson
in our efforts to make Christians.
There is no mere reformation here.
Second, we need the lesson that we
may know how to adjust ourselves
to outward things. In what respect
do outward things according to this
teaching, affect a man? The
leaching is this: That outward things
affect a Christian man only in propor
tion to the extent that they break
down and destroy some moral quality
within.
Let me, if I may, give you an ex
ample of what I mean, because it is
exceedinkly important that we shall
be taught some along here.
Some men can make money with
out becoming covetous. Some can
not. Money to some men only affects
them in away that will destroy mor
al quality and prevent them from be
ing a blessing to the world. Money
to other men is a blessing. Money
is not an evil in itself; there is no
sin in money.
Some women can enjoy jewelry and
wear it, and not have it injure their
spiritual nature. Some other women
can not. Some women can not keep
their eyes off it, never mind who is

preaching, or what he says. They are
thinking about that diamond on the
finger, anxious that someone may see
it. Sometimes it is the ring on some
one’s else finger that does far more
mischief to some of you.
Some people can enjoy amusements
without becoming frivolous. Others
can not.
Now, our Lord, if he teaches any
thing at this point, teaches this: that
privileged things are wrong accord
ing to the way they affect our moral
quality; never mind what man may
say, this is clearly the teaching of
Jesus.
And then again we need to keep
this teaching in mind that we may
know how to judge other people. To
say of all men that a passion for
wealth is sin, is in itself sin, it is un
righteous judgment.
We do not know but that some who
are thus judged are guarding their
passion, with a mighty struggle. The
passion is not sin. It is sin when it
is allowed such expression as will de
stroy moral quality. God hasten the
time when we, as Christians, will
learn that it is necessary to under
stand these fundamental things, that
we may grow in grace by the spirit
ual method, and not attempt the meth
od of law reliance simply.
We need it that we may know how
to develop spiritual life The spirit
ual man requires spiritual food. He
may enjoy the washing of hands, and
the cleansing of pots, and cups; he
may give himself great concern about
such outward appearances, but all
this, as good as it may be, can never
feed the inner man. He can only be
fed by spiritual food. The only way
that Jesus is ever revealed to the
world for spiritual growth, is by spir
itual feeding. By spiritual feeding I
mean prayer, meditation, and the
Word of God. I do not mean at all
that a man has got to be forever on
his knees. There are times when you
have no right to be on your knees;
when you ought to be up on your
feet with your face to duty, ready for
service and serving. I do not mean
than a man has everlastingly to be in
a dreamy state of meditation. There
are times when you want your keen
est wits about you. I do not mean,
either, that a man should be ever be
fore an open Bible. There are times
when you don’t want your Bible, when
your eyes and hands and head and
heart are all full, grappling with the
problems that beat and throb with
life.
What I mean by spiritual feeding
is this: That in the midst of all our
greatest problems, we should give
necessary heed to the means of grace
that are given for the inner man in
oYder that we may be able to adjust
ourselxes to the problems of life in
such away as to use the world and
not abuse it.
Summing up the whole of this
teaching, the following practical
points suggest themselves:
1. Let us not mistake cleansed
hands for cleansed hearts.
2. Let us not exalt the ritual above
the real.
3. Let us not regard the sanctuary
more than the service.
4. Let us not desire peace at the
expense of power.
5. Let us not accept society in
preference to sanctity.
6. Let us not offer sacrifice and
withhold service.
7. Let us not put receiving above
revealing.
