THE GOLDEN AGE
I have a Friend so kind and true,
But the miles are far and the time
seems long;
He has said to watch and he’d come
again.
I sit in the gloaming,—’tis even
song.
Said the Friend, “If I go, I will come
again;
So watch till my chariot you shall
hear.
It may be at cockcrow; it may be at
even;
It will not be long,—even now I’m
near.”
The glorious day has waned to its
close,
The Confession of Mr. C. I. Garette
By BILLIE.
Did I ever tell you of my dream
chat I had when I was lying out under
the old oak tree one hot, summer day?
I am going to tell it to you, then.
It was just after dinner, and I was
feeling awfully sleepy. So I got one of
Ma’s old quilts that she doesn’t care
much for, and look it out under the
old oak tree in the front lot. I spread
it down for a pallet, and it wasn’t
long until I began to have a strange
experience.
A little, old man, not half as big
as my little finger, came running right
up to my ear and began shouting as
loud as he could at me. I looked at
the comical little fellow, and said:
“say, why do you want to come around
here this time of day, when I’m so
sleepy I can’t keep my eyes open?
Who are you, and what do you want?”
The little fellow got closer and tried
to shout a little louder: “See here,
pard, I am Mr. C. I. Garette. I am
especially fond of boys, and in fact,
I spend most of my time with boys
and men. Can’t you do a little favor
for me, and I will do something for
you?”
It was funny to see that curious
little fellow right there shouting in
my ear and promising to do something
for me if I would do something for
him. I thought it would be Interest
ing for me to find out just what he
wanted me to do, and I said: “Well,
my little friend, what can I do for
LETTERS FROM CLUB MEMBERS.

connected with the operation of
The Golden Age Piano Club is the
large number of appreciative letters
which we receive from club members.
The following letter from an Alabama
lady is a sample of the kind that
reach us almost every day. She
writes: “The piano you shipped me

O. K. Monday, and is perfectly satis

be, though, before I bought it, for
being a Georgian myself, I know what

with the reputation they have they
can not afford to send out an inferior

/ Know He Will Come
By MARY M. MORSE.
And the sunset gleams across the
sky
Have faded into the tender gray;
And the morning watch is a far cry.
1 I
But I know he’ll come; it will not be
long;
So I calmly wait as the moments
fly.
Over the hills the morning breaks;
I see his sign in the pearly sky.
And when he comes, I shall no more
think
Os the long dark hours I waited
here;
I shall run and clasp his garment’s
hem,
Who has promised no more a pain
or tear.
you?” Then he jumped up and
down, clapping his little hands, and I
think I noticed a little smile, but, of
course, it was a very tiny one for his
face wasn’t a bit bigger than a lady
pea. “I’m so glad I’ve found a
friend” said he, “I want you to take
me in your fingers, put one end of me
in your mouth. Then, get a match,
strike it on something, and then light
the end of me that is not in your
mouth.” I was tickled at such a
strange request. The very idea of
the little fellow wanting me to do
chat for him! But I let on that I was
not a bit surprised. “Then, what must
I do?” said I. “O, well, after you
have set me afire, I want you to go
co sucking the smoke that I make.
Some of it you may swallow, some of
it will be nice to puff in the face of
somebody. Won’t you please do this
for me?”
’‘Well,” said I, laughing, “I have
never been accused of being a sucker
yet, and I am nearly fourteen years
old. Do you think I look like a suck
er?” “You are a strange boy,” said
che little man, “The most of boys do
as I bid them, without asking ques
tions.”
“Tell me something more about
yourself, Mr. Garette,” I said, for I
thought that he might have a story
chat would be interesting to boys.
“Well, to begin with,” said he,
looking down sheepishly toward the
ground, “I am the son of Mr. C. I. Gar
ette. He is descended through a long
line of ancestors from the famous XX
T O. Bacco family. I am his little son.
The ‘ette’ at the end of my name shows
that I am a little fellow. But I am
more popular than my father ever
was. I was born at a place in North
Carolina,'and they shipped me with a
lot of my little brothers in a big car
to this place. lam just starving to
find some nice, good boy who will
smoke me. Now, say, won’t you
please do it?”
