What are they? Love. It needs that!
Saltation. It needs that! Every man
that loves Jesus can give these two
things. My brethren when the Church
wakes up to realize the fact that she
can supply this greatest need, and
stops talking about the things that she
cannot supply, the quicker she is go
ing to save humanity. Jesus when He
saw the multitude, when He saw their
needs, their hunger, their sicknesses;
saw that they were like sheep without
a shepherd, He was moved toward
them to help them. Have you got
Jesus’ compassion for the multitude?
Does it strike and bruise your heart
when you see it in its heart-longings
and sadness and sins; or is it to you
just a mob?
Summarizing what we have said
there are a few pointed suggestions
that I desire to leave with you:
Practical Points.
1. “The strength of the multitude
is in proportion to its number in
need.” Let it sink in your heart. The
strength of a chain is in proportion to
its weakest link; it is no stronger than
its weakest link, never mind how many
links it has. The strength and power
and usefulness of the multitude does
not consist of its numbers; it is in
proportion to its number in need.
2. “True compassion is love in ac
tion.” Never let that escape you.
When you hear some one say, “he is
a compassionate man” look at his
hands. Are they, empty? Do they re
main empty? If so he is not a com
passionate man. A compassionate
heart means a full hand, a hand to
Danger in Modern Universities
(Continued from Page 6.)
Yes, indeed real salvation can stand
before higher education and higher
criticism, but, of course, it can’t stand
for those people who give way to ev
ery new wind of doctrine under the
guise of “Truth” or “New Learning.”
In the first place, it is dangerous to
put oneself under an influence that is
destroying the Word of God and de
destroying the faith of the people, and
destroying the efficacy of the blood of
Christ to cleanse from sin, and the
power of Christ to change the hearts
of people. Os course, “New Learning”
and modern “Truth,” claim to believe
in salvation, but it is a salvation of
works, and “works without Christ are
dead.” It is all education and train
ing; no change of heart is needed if
they just train them right, and they
educate the sin out of them.
This quotation, in one of your let
ters, seems ridiculous, if it were not
serious. You advise me to “Screw up
your confidence and faith in the salva
tion you preach and do not be content
with anything short of the genuine.”
We have the genuine article at Merid
ian. There is no doubt of it. We
have confidence in salvation through
the cleansing power of the blood of
Christ, but we have no faith in help
from “New Learning” and so-called
“Truth,” to deepen our religious ex
perience, or in helping to spread full
salvation over the land.
All the way through your letter you
seem to think that we are fighting
higher education. We believe in high
er education; we are fighting the devil.
When he comes at our young people,
and even our young preachers, in the
form of so-called “Truth” and “New
Learning,” etc., we feel like fighting

Compassion of Jesus

help.
3. “The heart that feels should
have the hand that helps.” That is
too obvious to need comment.
4. “All our little, plus all Jesus’
much, equals all man’s needs.” We
talk about the needs of the world as
if we were up against something for
which there was no adequate supply.
The supply is at hand. It consists
of all our little, never mind what that
is—plus all His much. This equals all
man’s needs, never mind what they
are.
5. “As we give to others, Christ
gives back to us.” “Give, and it shall
be given unto you.” Have you ever
thought on the tide of the sea-shore.
You see the tide coming in; you think,
Well that tide is going to waste it
self. But the tide comes in, and then,
there is a law that we know nothing
about, that carries that tide back; and
here it goes and here it comes, —give,
and it shall be given to you. That
is the law of Christ. Give money, and
it shall be given unto you. Give time,
and it shall be given unto you. Give
love, and it shall be given unto you.
Give happiness and it shall be given
unto you.
6. “What think ye of the multi
tude?” This is the all-important ques
tion. Upon this your whole character
depends. Never mind what else you
think or do. Your real Christian
character depends upon your concep
tion of the multitude.
I am tired of that orthodoxy that
can be written merely. I want to
know, “what think ye of the multi
tude?”
him harder than ever. .
Here is another ridiculous passage:
“The reason you fight higher educa
tion, Doctor, is because you confuse
some things until your fundamentals
include a great category of secondary
matters. If you had fought through
the issues you contest everything
would adjust itself most beautifully.”
I wonder if you do think that we poor,
ignorant fellows haven’t “fought
through the issues!”
Bless your heart, you are young yet.
We believe you are honest and earn
est, but in fifteen or twenty years from
now this letter, which you have writ
ten, will seem ridiculous to yourself.
sou say you believe in nearly all
you ever believed in, though different
ly. That is just what nearly all of
them say. Your classmate who was
captured by the higher critics said
that, but his spiritual life is wonder
fully different. It is what this young
lady teacher, to whom we referred,
said, but she had no religious experi
ence and no power with God when she
returned. “Much learning hath made
thee mad,” is what Brother Paul would
tell you.
Quoting your letter again: “You
will make a mistake by evading the is
sue of truth.” How absurd! There
is no issue with real truth. The issue
is with this so-called, self-termed
“truth,” and “New Learning” that was
