A NEW WAY TO MAKE MONEY.
I am making a fortune selling Pure
Fruit Candy. Any brainy person can
do likewise; so if you want more mon
ey than you evei’ possessed, write me
and I will start you in business. I
am glad to help others, who, like my
self, need money. People say “the
candy is the best they ever tasted!” —
therein lies the beauty of the busi
ness —the candy is eaten immediately
and more ordered. You don’t have to
canvas; you sell right from your own
home. I made sl2 the first day. So
can you. Isabelle Inez, Block 2, East
Liberty, Pittsburgh, Pa.
said, “My old hands tremble so bad, I
can’t hold it.” And the girl replied:
“Never mind, I will hold it.” And
there we sat, so busy—l was trying
to convert a sceptic, and the sceptic
was trying to convert a preacher—
that neither of us offered a helping
hand. Soon something had happened
at our end of the train. We had some
how stopped talking, and the girl took
the cup and carried it back, and
placed it on the stand, and paid for
the coffee and the sandwich; and then
she came with a bright, sweet smile
and walked up to her, and said, “I hope
you enjoyed it, mother.” As she start
ed away, the old soul caught her by
the skirt, and pulled her back, and
said, “Honey, I don’t know what your
name is, you know, but God bless
you; I know you are a Christian, be
cause you are so much like Jesus.”
Just then this old sceptic reached
over and touched me on the shoulder,
and, you know, I can feel that touch
now. I don’t know if there is not a
spot there —there ought to be; but
there is one in my heart; nobody
will ever get it out. He said, “Brough
ton, do you hear that?” “Yes,” I
said, “I hear it; I hope you did.” He
said, “Yes, but that is not what I want
to say. If you preachers would love
like that, there would be fewer scep
tics that would talk like this.”
Brethren, that is the story of the
life of Jesus told in another way.
That is what He did. That is the
reason why His words were with au
thority, were with power. That is the
reason men could not withstand what
He said. It was because everything
that He said and everything that
He did was propelled by a spirit of
love and tenderness and compassion.
I would not say a word against the
most earnest study of the Bible that
we can possibly give, for the more
we study it in the right way, the more
we learn how to do the right thing;
but oh, my brethren, let us not de
pend upon our knowledge of the Bible,
or our ability to expound it, for our
power among men. This knowledge
of the Bible and this ability to expound
it must be with compassion for the
needs of the world, or else all our
preaching and teaching will be in
vain. Oh, for a revival of love in the
Christian Church! Oh, for the time
to come in our churches when our
men and women will be so saturated
with this love spirit that characterized
their Lord, as that all men as they
come into the church and touch the
congregation will feel the throb and
thrill of its presence. No wonder the
world, as it enters the doorway of the
average church today, feels repelled
rather than attracted. There is such

frigidity, such coldness, such formal
ity, such lack of the freedom that the
Spirit gives; no wonder men who are
outside the Church, and know noth
ing themselves experimentally of re
ligion—no wonder they are all driven
away.
You have all heard in this country,
I have no doubt, of that lad who was
seen in Chicago one Sunday morning
about eight o’clock, running full-tilt
across the street. A policeman arrest
ed him with the words: “Where are
you going?” He said to the policeman,
“I am going to Sunday School.”
“Where are you going to Sunday
School at this rate?” “I am going
across to Mr. Moody’s church.” “Why
are you going away across oyer to
Mr. Moody’s church when you pass
a hundred or more churches to get
there? Why don’t you turn in to some
of them?” And he looked up sur
prised that the policeman would dare
to ask him such a question, and he
said, “Because, sir, they love a follow
up there.” That is it. That is the
secret of great preaching. That is
the secret of great Sunday School
teaching. That is the secret of great
Christian living. It is love, that shows
itself in all that we say and all that
we do. It is the unselfish principle of
love, serving, not for duty’s sake, but
serving for love’s sake. Oh, I would
rather have in my Sunday School one
teacher for all the pupils that come
into it, whose heart is on fire with
love, who can suffer with children,
who can enter into the child’s life and
spirit with the love of a child, than
a hundred teachers that have stood
their examination, and gotten their
certificate, that know nothing of this
love. I would rather have one person
working in my after-meeting with un
saved souls, who works from the
standpoint of love, than a hundred
personal workers who have learned a
few verses in the Bible, and can turn
with great readiness to them. I have
had them both, and I know how to
value them both. May I tell you of
one experience, that you may see ex
actly what 1 mean: for I do not want
to be misunderstood.
I had a woman worker in my Church
who had graduated in one of our Bible
Training Schools. She had learned
the passages in the Bible, and had
them marked, one, two, three, four,
CHEAP PIANOS CAUSE NEURAS-
THENIA.
An eminent nerve specialist is au
thority for the statement that pianos
of “tin-panny” tone are responsible for
many cases of neurasthenia or ner
vous prostration. If you have ever
lived next door to such an instrument
you will doubtless agree with the doc
tor.
In selecting a piano it is well to re
member that instruments which are
ordinarily sold at two hundred to two
hundred and twenty-five dollars, al
most invariably develop a metallic tone
within one to five years. Such in
struments soon become a nuisance to
the neighborhood and fall into disuse.
They are the most expensive pianos
you can possibly buy.
It is here that The Golden Age
Piano Club comes to the rescue of the
man with a limited purse, for, by unit
ing our interests in a Club of one
hundred buyers, instead of each one
purchasing from a different factory, we
are able to secure the wholesale in
stead of the retail price, and thus ob
tain instruments of standard quality
for a price such as we are ordinarily
asked to pay for an inferior product.
Every reader is cordially invited to
write for the Club’s beautifully illus
trated catalogue which gives full in
formation. Address Ludden & Bates
