tion. When, we come to Jesus Christ
as Christians, and place our sins be
fore Him, and lay our hearts out be
fore Him, what happens ? He forgives.
He does not condone, and He does not
tolerate merely. He forgives, in the
sense that He dismisses them. It is
through the forgiveness of our Lord
that we obtain freedom from the pen
alty of sins committed. That sin of
yours that perhaps you now have in
your mind; have you brought it to
Jesus, and asked Him to deal with it?
Then, if you have been honest in that
confession, what has He done with it?
He has put it out of sight. Out of
whose sight? Out of yours, if you will
let Him; and He will never look at
that sin again. Never once.
And, if this is true, why is it that
Christian people allow themselves to
go moping about deploring their sins,
when they have honestly and truly,
as they know how, confessed these
sins to Jesus? It must be because they
do not know. Oh, my friends, Jesus
is ready any moment in the world,
when your sins are confessed and
handed over to Him, to put them clear
out of sight.
Then this is a very important truth
to us, because of our attitude to oth
ers. The primary purpose of our
Lord’s story was to show the disci
ples how they should forgive one an
other, and also to show to Christians
for all time the same thing. What an
important truth! Plainly stated it is
this: That inasmuch as we have
been forgiven for so much by our
Lord, we should forgive also. There
is a story told, of a man in Massa
chusetts, who, one day found his
neighbor’s horse in his field. He was
mad about it, and took the horse and
put it into the public pound. Meeting
the owner soon after, he told him
what he had done, and added, “If I
catch him there again, I will do the
same thing!’ His neighbor replied,
“Well, the other night I looked out
of my window, and saw your cattle
in my meadow. I took your cattle,
and carried them over to your house,
and put them in your barn shed and
fixed the gate. If ever I catch them
there again, I will do the same thing!”
That man was so struck with the re
ply, that he at once took the horse
out of the pound, and paid the charges
himself. That is the way to live, my
brother. The most unhappy man in
the world is the man who is going
round with the grouch. Feeling that
somebody has got something, or done
something, or said something that he
don’t like, and carrying it about, and
nursing it, and turning and twisting
it around. God bless you, if I am talk
ing to one like that. Hand that over
to Jesus; the whole thing! That is
not the way to live a happy life, in
proper relationship with Christ, for
the success of His work in establish
ing the Kingdom. There is a story
told of an old Scotch preacher, who,
one day, was visited by a member of
his Church who gave him a terrible
story about another of his members.
The old Scot said to him, If you have
not told this to anyone else, take it
to the feet of Jesus, and there lay it,
and never speak of it again. If Jesus

wants it scattered, He is able to do
so without your help.”
There is a great deal in that! Do
not to be so anxious to volunteer to
be a scandalmonger. God don’t want:
that kind of people. More, He won’t
have that kind of people. They are not
in His program. God wants the man
first of all who has been forgiven, and
is so happy in the thought of his for
giveness that he will forgive anybody
anything. For the greatest thing is
a little thing in comparison with the
things for which Christ has forgiven
us. This is the teaching of this para
ble.
It is most important finally, for the
success of our work in establishing
the Kingdom of Christ. There is a
story told of Nelson, that the day be
fore the battle of Trafalgar one of the
most critical days in the history of
England, he sent for his admiral to
come aboard his ship. On his arri
val Nelson asked him, “Where is your
captain?” The admiral replied, “We
are not on good terms.” “Terms!”
said Nelson, “Not on good terms with
each other?” He at once sent aboard
to the other ship for the captain.
When he came on board, Nelson
brought the two men together, and
joined their hands. Then, pointing
to the enemy’s fleet before them, he
said: “Yonder is the enemy, shake
hands like Englishmen. We can not
fight the enemy when we are divid
ed ourselves.”
One word more. I am perhaps
speaking to somebody who says,
“Well this may be true, all of it, but
it don’t fit me, because I have not
got anything against anybody; but I
do know somebody who has got some
thing against me.” But then I am
not to blame. I have not done or
said a thing, and I am perfectly will
ing to forgive them. But they have
never asked me. If I had a chance of
bringing it about I would. But it is
the other fellow.”
Listen! Our Lord, in Matthew 5:24
deals with you. This is the way He
does it: “If thou bring thy gift to
the altar, and there rememherest that
thy brother had ought against thee;
leave there thy gift before the altar;
go thy way; first be reconciled to thy
brother, and then come and offer thy
gift.” You are to go and straighten
it out if you can; and until you do,
you can rest assured you will get no
credit for your gifts, whether they be
money or service, or what not.
So careful is »ur Lord about this,
it filled His heart to the very last
minute, even to the limit of His life.
And when He has done this for us, He
demands that we shall forgive before
we can give any acceptable service.
I will conclude with these words of
Whittier:
“My heart was heavy for its trust had
been
Abused, its kindness answered with
foul wrong;
So, turning gloomy from my fellow
men,
One summer Sabbath day I strolled
along
The green mounds of the village bur
ial place,
Where, pondering how all human love
and hate
Find one sad level; and how, soon or

Wrong and wrong doer, each with
meek face
And cold hands folded over a still
heart,
Pass the green threshold of our com
mon grave.
