To the I’atron* of the Southerner.
Before this announcement will appear in
the “Southerner.” I will have left Rome for
Virginia to defend Southern soil from invas
sion. I leave my paper under the control
and management of H. A.Gartrell and C. 11.
Smith, who have kindly consented to take !
charge of my interests, and they, or cither!
one of them are hereby fully authorized and 1
empowered to receive and reciept tor money
due the “Southerner” office since my con* I
nexion with it ami to pay the debts accru- ;
ing.
I once more earnestly appeal to subscri- ,
bersandall others owing the office to aid!
these two gentlemen in their efforts to sus- !
tain the paper in our absence.
ts GEO. T. STOVALL
With diffidence, we assume the Editorial I
duties of the Southerner temporarily. All I
political organizations having been disband* |
ed in the Confederate States, by common ’
consent, we shall not directly or indirectly
assist in building up any new one, while}
occupying our present position.
Mr, Chas. H. Smith has kindly consented
to give us what editorial assistance we ma)
desire. Mr. G. T. Stovall, as will be seen
elsewhere in this issue, is, or will be soon,
actively engaged in the Southern Army, has i
promised to correspond for the Southerner. ‘
With the assistance above indicated, we shall !
endeavor to give our leaders at least a good
newspaper. H. A. GARTRELL.
I nion Prayer Meeting.'.
There will be a Union Prayer meeting
this morning at S o'clock in the City Hall
for the special purpose of beseeching the ;
God of Sabaoth to give to our soldiery success
and glorious victory. Let there be a large
attendance. We have much to be thankful ’
for in the past and much to ask for the fu* ,
ture.
••These are my Jewels.”
Mrs. Ann R. Hutchings, a widow lady of
this city, has 2 sons and 2 sons-in-law, in ,
other words 4 sons, in the Rome Light ’
Guards, now en route for the “tented fields” j
in Virginia.
We publish this week the list of the offi
cers and privates of the three military com*
panies, who have left this place, for the war,
to fight for the South. As it will be inter
esting to refer frequently to the lists, we i
suggest to subscribers the propriety of pre
serving this issue.
Geo. T. Stovall.
The Editor and Proprietor of the South
erner left for Virginia on Monday last, a
private in the ranks of the Rome Light
Guards. We verily believe that there is not
on this earth a nobler man, nor a more sin
cere and upright Christian gentleman.
Go, George, and may "He who tempers
the wind to the shorn lamb” be kind to
you.
We trust that a liberal public will sustain
the Southerner in bis absence.

TO ARMS! TO ARMS! YE BRAVE!! .
Capt. Hamilton’s company is not yet full, j
They want men who are not under weight
or size—men who are cool, deliberate and
brave—men who know what they are fight
ing for. This company is well organized,
with most excellent officers, and they should
fill their ranks to the number ofan hundred
quick, keen-sighted, sharp shooters. Come
on Floyd county is ahead, and must keep
ahead. We have already boasted that she
will send a Thousand men who will whip out
any three thousand of Lincoln’s Yankee per*
tanks. Fili up Capt. Hamilton’s company
immediately—and you will be received into
service before toe next issue of our paper.
We learn that a military company, com
posed of good men, who are willing to serve
during the war, was organized at Floyd
Springs on Saturday last, by the election of
the following officers :
Jas. F. Morton, Captain.
Elias B. Ballenger, Ist Lieutenant. I
Geo. Fleetwood, 2d “
Wm. Hanson, 3d “
George Kinney, Orderly Sergeant.
Henry Kenon 2d “
Thomas Mays, 2d “
John Hanson, 4th “
Dr. M. R. Ballenger, Surgeon.
e learn also that a company, composed
of men over 45 years of age, was formed at
the same time and place, who intend mak
ing a tender of their services to Gov. Brown
—subject to be called to any part of the
State. Col. Robert IJ. Moore was elected
Captain.
Southern Funds in New York.— The New
York Day Book, of Saturday, says:
Southern funds are improving in New
York. The brokers put down the bills at
first at the rate of 50 per cent., but finding
that the people were not all fools, they have
been letting up. To day North and South
Carolina money can be sold al 15 per cent.,
Virginia at 12, and New Orleans at 10 per
Ciht. It will be better than this befoie many
days, for Southern banks are to day sounder
and safer than Northern ones.
Boston May 27—The steamship Massachu
setts sailed to-day, heavily laden with muni
tions and supplies for Fort Pickens.

Messrs. IIAVII.AXP. STEVENSON A CO., who are
nmong the largest wholesale Drug dealers in the South,
write as follows:
Charleston, S.C., Jan. 27th, 1860.
Gents: Wo tako pleasure in stating that on yesterday
our Mr. Stevenson nnd others were ear-witnesses to a
most astonishing recital nnd high encomium in regard to
your Pills. Henry Goethe, Esq., a prominent citizen nnd
planter of Beaufort District, c.dlcd upon ns and inquired
if we kept Shallenberger’s Pills. Upon our asking if he
knew anything of them, ho replied substantially as fol-
I lows: “Sir, I regard them a specific for Chills and Fever.
They were u«ed with signal success on the Charleston and
Savannah Railroad last summer and autumn, in the most
sickl y region and under the most trying circumstances. I
| can testify that, out of ono gang of about two hundred
negro operatives, fifty were stricken down with Fever and
Ague, and everyone recovered by the timely use of Shal
lenberger’s Pills; and yon may tell them for me, if you
1 choose, that th>*y possess the GREATEST MEDICINE IN
I THE WORLD!”
Extract of a letter from Ex-U. S. Marshal Kent, of
i Maryland:—
Gcn.tle.nicn: T havo tried Dr. Shallenberger’s Fever
and Ague Antidote in six cases; five of them were my
servants, ami the other myself—and each case was cured
by taking the Antidote according to directions. I have
every reason to consider Dr. Shallenberger’s Antidote the
best remedy for ague, or chills and fever, I have ever tried
or heard of.
