KENLI BROOKE ANDERSON SHS Competition Cheerleaders to compete in state finals Swainsboro High School cheerleaders recently advanced from sectionals as the fifth team of the top 16 AA teams in the state and will compete for state finals Monday, Feb. 15, in Macon. On Saturday, Feb. 6, cheer coach Luci Metz- McNeely stated, "Today was surreal. It was one of those moments that we talk about happening but hope never do. We had Region/Sectionals competition cheerlead ing today in Vidalia. We took the mat and had a great beginning, and we get through running tumbling and one of the main fliers gets injured to the point where she cannot put any weight on her ankle. The head judge stops the routine. In less than seven min utes, we had to regroup and mark a primary stunt and move two fli ers around to make the pyramid work. The flyer on the right side of the pyramid had to perform a switch up, high low tick tock, back flip to (continued on page 5D) MAYOR SCHWABE PRESENTS CHECK TO SCOTT AND EMC NURSES Mayor Schwabe and City Administrator Lawson present check to Damien Scott, Emanuel County Medical Center administrator The City of Swainsboro presented a check to the Emanuel County Medical Center last Friday for specialized PPE suits for ICU workers treating Covid 19 patients. EMS Director Courtney Terwilliger explained that the long, tedious hours experienced by nurses working in protective suits can be overwhelming at times. The new suits are equipped to provide conditioned air ventilation making the long hours a little more comfortable. In presenting the check Mayor Charles Schwabe reminded everyone of the sacrifice health care workers are making ev ery day, "On behalf of the folks in the city, I want to thank everyone here at the hospital and all the people who are fighting this virus throughout this communi ty, and I hope these suits make their jobs a little bit easier." SCENE FROM PAST PINE TREE FESTIVAL 2021 Pine Tree Festival is on! The Pine Tree Festival executive committee announced this week that the 2021 Pine Tree Festival will be back this May! There will be a multitude of quality entertainment activities for the community to enjoy, including a performance by Rhythm and Pines on May 7 and the parade on May 8. Don't forget: Shepeard Community Blood Center to hold plasma drive Shepeard Community Blood Center continues to be in need of Covid Convalescent Plasma (CCP) from donors who have fully recovered from a Covid-19 infec tion. If you have recov ered from Covid-19, you may have antibod ies in your plasma that can be used to treat ex tremely ill patients. In an effort to collect ad ditional CCP, Shepeard is hosting two drives in Swainsboro during the month of February. The first drive will be held at Emanuel Med ical Center (117 Kite Rd., Swainsboro, GA 30401), on Feb. 20. On Feb. 21, another drive will be held at CPR Fit ness and Tan and The Spa @ CPR (203 S. Cir cle Drive, Swainsboro, GA 30401). The drives will run from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. each day. To be eligible to donate Covid-19 Convalescent Plasma, you must meet the following eligibili ty criteria: 1. You must show proof of a positive Covid-19 test or positive antibody test result. 2. You must be symptom free for at least 14 days. 3. You must be able to pass a regular blood do nor questionnaire and physical. Additional ly, female donors may need to be screened for donor eligibility before they can donate. This can be done on Feb. 8, at Emanuel Medical Center, between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. For addi tional details regarding donating or pre-screen ing, or to schedule an appointment to do nate, call 706.737.4551, or email ccpdonor@ shepeardblood.org. All successful donors will receive a $100 Visa gift card as a "Thank You" for donating.
