Cheers presents program to Kiwanis
The Kiwanis Club of Swainsboro held its weekly meeting on Tuesday, Feb.
2, 2021 at the New China Restaurant at 7 p.m. With President Dess Smith III
presiding, there were 27 in attendance, including six Zoomers. The guests for
the evening were Governor-Elect Byron Mullican, former Lt. Governor Gary
Howard, Veronica Cheers, LaDerrica Knight, Eula Knight, Farrah Knight, Mary
Knight and Yvette Knight. The whipped-cream pound cake, donated by Joe
Ware, brought $54 and was won by Travis Garrett. The Domino's pizza was
donated by Domino's Pizza and was won by President Smith.
Tim Goodman hosted the program for the evening. He introduced Cheers,
coordinator of Student Life at EGSC. Cheers is also the coordinator of the Bobcat
Bridge. The Bobcat Bridge program was organized to ensure that students
attending East Georgia State College would not be adversely affected in their
academic studies due to their inability to provide basic needs. The program also
fosters relationships among students, staff and faculty. She talked about how the
program is sustained by donations and by grants.
The Kiwanis Club members brought items this week for the bridge, enough to
fill a pickup. Some student groups like Phi Theta Kappa volunteer to assist in the
program. The program is a little smaller this spring because of lower enrollment
due to Covid, but it usually serves about 300 students per year.
President Smith asked Governor-Elect Byron Mullican to come forward for
two special presentations. Governor-Elect Mullican presented a Mel Hayden
Award to EGSC Circle K member LaDerrica Knight and a Governor's Leadership
Medallion to Kiwanian Deana Patrick. Knight sang for Kiwanis Club members at
the end of the program. Also, Cheryl Goodman reported to the club on the pizza
lunch for The Forest-Blade staff in appreciation for what they do for Kiwanis and
the community.

elect new president Tom McCall

(GFB) members elected
Tom McCall for a two-
year term as president
of Georgia's largest
general farm organiza
tion on Dec. 8. McCall
of Elbert County grows
wheat, oats, triticale,
grain corn, sweet corn
and hay. The McCall
family also raises beef
cattle, hogs and sheep.
McCall replaces Gerald
Long, who retired from
the position after serv
ing as GFB president
since 2016.
McCall has been a
Farm Bureau member
since 1978. McCall's first
leadership role with
Farm Bureau was serv
ing as the chairman of
the Elbert County Farm
Bureau (ECFB) Young
Farmers & Ranchers
(YF&R) Committee.
He represented GFB's
2nd District on the GFB
YF&R Committee in
1981-82 and chaired
the state committee in
1982. McCall represent
ed GFB's 2nd District
on the GFB Board of Di
rectors from 1984-1996.
He also served as ECFB
president for a number
of years.
McCall served in the
Georgia House of Rep
resentatives for 26 years
from Jan. 9, 1995, when
he was sworn into of
fice, until he retired
from the legislature
at the end of his 2020
term. As a state repre
sentative, McCall repre
sented Georgia's House
Dist. 33, which includes
Elbert and Lincoln
counties and portions
of Madison, Wilkes and
Columbia counties. Mc

farm life. The McCalls
attend Eliam United
Methodist Church.

Daniel Johnson of
Pierce County was
re-designated the orga

delegates. Johnson also
represents GFB's South
Georgia Region.

organization's Middle
Georgia region on the
GFB Board of Direc
tors in the third year
of his seventh term.
The GFB Middle Geor
gia Region includes 56
county Farm Bureaus
in the middle third of
Georgia. While serv
ing on the GFB Board,
Fountain has chaired
the GFB Legislative,
Finance and Insurance
committees numerous
times. He is the third
generation to own his
family's farm located
in Emanuel and John
son counties. He raises
cattle, hay, timber, small
grains and pecans.
Founded in 1937, the
Georgia Farm Bureau
Federation is the state's
largest general farm
organization with 158
county chapters. As a
membership-driven,
nongovernmental or
ganization, GFB serves
as the voice of Geor
gia farmers and rural
Georgia by advocating
for them on legislative
issues and promoting
