TheBlade Swainsboro, GA • February 17, 2021 • ummiEmaniielConntyLive.com DAR announces essay winners Each year, the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) annually spon sors the American History Essay Contest for students in grades 5-8. The Gover nor David Emanuel-Ad- am Brinson Chapter, NS DAR, promoted this essay contest to students in all schools in Emanuel Coun ty. The topic for 2020-2021 was the Boston Massacre. March 5, 2020 marked the 250th anniversary of this historic event. The students were required to write their essay from the perspective of some one living in Boston and witnessing the events of March 5. The following students submitted the best essay from their grade at the school-level of competi tion: Eighth grade - Jamie Gunter, David Emanuel Academy (DEA); Hallie Kate Johnson, Emanuel County Institute (ECI); and Ariel Averett, Swainsboro Middle School (SMS). Seventh grade - Addalyn Terwilliger, DEA; Arach- chige Nimna Samadhi Salgado, ECI; and Alexus Le'unna Mercer, SMS. Sixth grade - Tucker Free, DEA; and Lilly DeLe on, ECI. Fifth grade - Aubrey Scott, DEA. Essays of the school win ners were evaluated to de termine a chapter winner as follows: Ariel Averett, eighth grade; Addalyn Terwillig er, seventh grade; Tucker Free, sixth grade; and Au brey Scott, fifth grade. The four chapter win ners received a certificate and $25 check. These essays advanced to district-level competi tion. Scott was the south east district winner. Her essay will be forwarded for state-level competition. "We are thankful for each student who took the time to learn more about the Boston Massacre and write an essay," shared Lynn Torrance, DAR mem ber, who coordinated the local participation. "You are all to be commended."
